Pink Ruffles Cake with a Blue Bow

I’ve always wanted to do a ruffles cake, so when the request came along for a Pink Ruffles cake with a Robin’s Egg Blue Bow – I was so excited!

Ruffles cakes are so feminine and girly and pretty, don’t you think?

For this cake, I baked 6″ and 8″ round cakes and covered them in pink marshmallow fondant.  Then I used my FMM Ribbon cutter to cut wide strips of fondant to make the ruffles on each tier.

Starting at the top of the cake, I attached the bottom of each strip with sugar glue and with my fingers, shaped the edges into random ruffles!  Then moving down a couple of inches, I did the next layer of ruffles.

Once I was done, I added the bow.    I didn’t make it ahead of time, but rather made each of the loops (similar to how I make loops for the poofy bow) and then glued the back of each one to the cake.    I added the tails, gluing different spots to the cake to give it a wrinkled effect.

Then I took two tiny strips of fondant and tucked in the ends behind the loops with a gumpaste tool… to make the knot!  It dried overnight and was just perfect!

This cake was chocolate cake with vanilla buttercream filling & frosting, covered and decorated with homemade marshmallow fondant.

My customer sent me a phone picture of the cake she wanted.  As I was writing this post, I tracked down the source to Fanciful Events!   Thanks for the inspiration!

And that’s it!  Do you have any questions about this cake?  Please leave them in the comments and I’ll do my best to answer and help out!
