When a friend from college contacted me on Facebook and asked me about helping her pull off a pirate themed party for her young boys, I was thrilled to help out!
The only catch was – she lives hours and hours away, so actually doing a cake and/or cupcakes for her wasn’t possible… instead she asked if I could do the toppers and mail them to her!
I had never mailed anything like this, so I was super nervous about getting everything to her in one piece, but in the end, it all turned out great!
First I made these 3-D Pirate cake toppers. I made one for each boy – one turning 6 and one turning 7. They were made from gum paste…. and this is the only good picture I have :-( .
I should note, I made these back in August when (a) my camera was broken and (b) we were headed out of town before the hurricane got here, so I was in a big hurry!
For the pirate face cupcake toppers, I used a lemon cookie cutter (of all things) for the head/face shape with ears.
I added bandanas in red, green and blue, some with polka dots and some with stripes. I used the lemon cookie cutter to get the shape right and a tiny teardrop cutter (from thisminiature cutters set) for the “knot”.
Then I made the note from a tiny ball of fondant and drew on the eyes, rosy cheeks, freckles and eyes with Americolor Food Markers.
All of the faces were made with homemade marshmallow fondant (with Tylose added in to help them harden) and Satin Ice Black Vanilla fondant for the eye patches.
Do you have any questions about these toppers? If so, leave me a comment!
