Black All Sports Cake

Today I’m sharing this fun All Sports Cake!   Sports and summertime go together, right?

I actually did this in April and you know I never share cakes so soon after making them (only because I’m a million years behind on sharing), but today on Facebook, Veena’s share theme was “black” and I decided just to go ahead and write a post about this fun cake!

Boy that was a long sentence…. ha!  What I’m really doing is just avoiding cleaning my kitchen, but let’s not tell anybody that and pretend I had planned all along to blog today, okay?  Okay!

So when I was browsing through my pictures looking for a cake with black – I realized that I’ve only done a couple of cakes that were covered in black fondant… and then several with black in the theme (mostly weddings).

Here are a few of my other cakes with black if you’d like to see…

Okay – so back to this cake.

Click to see invitations at Tiny Prints!

It was inspired by the party invitation for the birthday boy… you can see the full line of sports-themed invitations over at Tiny Prints or this specific Play Ball invitation here (or in pink here).

As soon as I saw the invitation, I knew I wanted to do a black cake… it’s just so bold and fun with the bright colors against the black backdrop, dontcha think?

Baseball Cake Topper

Since baseball was Jack’s favorite sport at party time, I made the topper a baseball.  It was made with rice cereal treats, covered in white chocolate, then white fondant and decorated with red fondant.

You can get an idea of how I cover balls in fondant here… and how I use white chocolate over rice cereal treats here.  I used the same technique to make this football cake topper.

OH – and I used my extruder to make the grass… it was homemade marshmallow fondant.

Lets Play Ball Cake

I tried to get as many sports balls as I could on the cake… I have no idea why I didn’t get a picture of the back of the cake.

Wilton Cookie Cutters for Name

I used Wilton ABC Cookie Cutters for Jack’s name, then my FMM Ribbon Cutter and the Wilton pastry wheel to do the borders on each tier.

All Sports Cake

I hand cut the “7” for the front… it’s the easiest number to do, thank goodness!    OH and for the black fondant, I really wanted to give it some texture, so I used a texture mat from this Manly Texture Mat set… it sort of looked like asphalt to me.  Yes?  No?  Maybe?  We’ll go with yes… it’ll make me feel better.

I think that’s it…  did I miss anything?  If you have any questions, leave me a comment!!  Happy Weekend!!

  2. Just curious, how much icing/frosting do you laying before you throw on the fondant?
