Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Cake and Cupcakes

Today I want to share with you a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Cake and Cupcakes.  I was really surprised when I got the request for these… they were popular when I was a kid but I honestly didn’t know Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were still around and “in” these days.

I’m so out of touch!  Ha!

Teenange Mutant Ninja Turtle Cupcake Toppers

I wish I could take credit for these fun little toppers, but honestly, these were done 100% by my husband.  I was swamped with a million things going on that weekend and he stepped in and saved the day by making the cupcake toppers and the cake topper for me.

He hand cut the faces using an Xacto knife and then embellished them with the  masks, eyes, mouths, etc.   I think it was better that he made them anyway… he is a “boy” after all and I’d have never gotten all the details right 😉

The faces were made with homemade marshmallow fondant.   He used candy eyes instead of making them, and use a black food marker to do the mouths.

The cake and cupcakes were chocolate cake with vanilla buttercream.  For the cake topper, Richy just made a bigger version of the cupcake toppers.

I used the Fox Run alphabet cutters to do Drew’s name and then silicone pearl mold to do the border.  All of the red embellishments were Satin Ice Red Vanilla fondant.  The cake was 2 layers (about 4″ tall) and it was baked in 6″ round pans.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle Cake and Smash Cakes

Didn’t the hubs do a fantastic job on these?  Sometimes other (female) decorators seem surprised that I “let” my husband help with cake or deliver cakes or even decorate or “trust” him to not mess things up, but let me tell you… it’s not a matter of “letting” him… I couldn’t do what I do without him.  He’s excellent at supporting everything I do and stepping in to help out any and every time I ask – no matter the task!   And I trust him without doubt – he cares as much about my business success as I do!  He’s my best friend and number one fan… and I’m blessed beyond measure.

Sooo, do you have any questions (for him) about this cake or the cupcakes?  Leave a comment and we’ll answer and help out if we can!

I totally feel the same way with my husband helping out. My Steve has a great eye for detail, and I ask for his help all of the time–Especially with “boy” cakes! :)

I see your hubby decorates with love just like you do. Anyone can see you both love doing cake decorating and it shows it your work. I love that kind of team work. Go for it and be proud of your team work!!!!!!

I think your husband did such a cute job!

I’m surprised people would say that to you, honestly. That just seems ignorant. So many of the great chefs and bakers are men (hello Cake Boss, Buddy Valastro). My husband does a TON of the cake work with me, it’s something we do together and have so much fun with it! There’s tasks he’s better at, and vice versa, and he’s up with me at 4 am finishing things off every time. So, I’m right there with you on this one! My husband is an awesome cake decorater, and in some aspects, better than me!

I LOVE these cupcakes but have zero artistic ability. Did your husband just freehand cutting the shape of the turtle heads? Thanks

For the cupcake toppers about how much marshmellow fondant should I make? I am making 36 cupcakes, I just need to know how many toppers does one batch make?

My husband helps me all the time!! I COULD NOT do what I do without him!! He delivers for me, picks up my ingredients, and has even been caught in the kitchen helping me cut fondant, smooth a cake, etc!! I’m blessed to also have a number one ‘cake’ fan and a best friend to go along with the sweet business!!

How long ahead of time can I make the fondant cake toppers? Is it possible to freeze or refrigerate them for a short period of time. I am afraid to wait until the last minute and then run into a problem. Thanks. Your toppers are so cute. My grandson is turning 6 and has been crazy for the Ninja Turtles before they became popular again. Thanks for sharing your expertise.
