A Cupcake Themed First Birthday Party… what a fun idea! For the cakes and cupcakes I want to show you today, the only theme was girly pastel colors and cupcakes. For the project I also needed to do a cake to go on the top of a cupcake stand (I wish I had a picture of it), so I made an 8″ cake with flowers, a ribbon and a bow to match the colors!
The cake is an 8″ vanilla cake with vanilla buttercream and homemade marshmallow fondant. I used one of the medium flower cutter/ejectors from this Wilton Gum Paste set to do tiny flowers on the cake in 4 different pastel colors of fondant.
The smash cake was the hardest part of this project… the little bugger just didn’t want to stand up! For this all buttercream (except the tiny flowers) I used a 4″ round Fat Daddio pan for the base of the cupcake and a 10 oz. Pyrex Custard Cup for the crown of the cupcake. I had to carve it alittle bit to get the perfect shape, but it was no big deal at all!
The hard part came after I used my 1M Wilton tip to make all that pretty buttercream on top… then that little baby just kept wanting to tip over! I ended up putting a small (pencil-sized) dowel rod through the middle of the cupcake to help it stand up! Anyway, this was the perfect size cake for a smash cake (in my humble opinion). It was bigger than a cupcake, but not so big that it was way too much cake for a 1 year old!
If you have any questions about making either of these cakes, please leave me a comment and I’ll help if I can!
