I shared this Airplane Cake on Facebook a few days ago and got lots of questions about it right away, so I decided to get it posted asap! But for reasons I'm about to spell out for you - this won't be a long post loaded with lots of pictures.
Let me tell you about my day. I'm sure that's why you're really here, right??
First, I woke up to call the AC man because our air condition was making an awful noise. I was dreading the call because air conditioner repairs are never cheap, and I just knew we were in for a big FAT bill.
But guess what? Thanks to a part still under warranty and help from my (electrician) Daddy, we have it back up and running for $10.15. Whoop-whoop!
Second and third - the sink got clogged when I was trying to clean the kitchen before the Dell technician got here to work on my ailing laptop. I had to go check the calendar to be sure it wasn't stuck on Monday...
I mean really... the kitchen looked like a bakery blew up and I was trying to hurry, hurry, hurry clean it so that the Dell guy didn't SEE the mess, when suddenly, the nasty, brown, chocolate frosting infected water won't.go.down.
I might have cried. And ran for the plunger and Drano.
Did you get all that? Broken AC. Broken laptop. Broken sink. All before noon. I truly wanted to go back to bed and start over.
But let me skip to the end. Praise the Lord - as I sit here tonight, all the things are fixed. And the bank is not completely broken.
Anywho - after all that, I still had to go to a follow-up appointment with the cardiologist (good report!!) and shop at Walmart (ughhhhh!!!).
So now you know why this post won't be loaded with a dozen edited pictures and fun stories about the cake. But I will do my very best to squeeze in as many vital details as possible.
Here's a quick rundown on the details for this Airplane Cake. If you have any questions, leave them in the comments!

Cake size: 5", 7" and 9" rounds. (each tier is 2 layers of cake). I use Magic Line pans every chance I get! Jennifer (Brandt's mom) planned to use the top tier as the smash cake for his birthday - which I think is a fantastic idea!!
Top & bottom tiers are Vanilla Cake.
Middle tier is Strawberry Cake.
Filled and frosted with Vanilla Buttercream.
Decorated with homemade marshmallow fondant, Satin Ice Red Fondant and Satin Ice Blue Fondant.
Tools:
- FMM Ribbon Cutter for the borders and stripes on the middle tier. See how to do the borders here.
- Scalloped cutter for the bottom tier back border from this Straight Frill Cutters Set.
- Star Cutters
- "1" from the Funky Alphabet Tappit Cutters
- Plaque cutter behind his name.
- Block Tappit Cutters for Brandt's name
- Not Just Cakes by Annie Cloud Cutters
- Tiny Star Plunger Cutters here
And last but not least, the toy on top is here: Green Toys Red Airplane (Made in the USA).

Hi Rose! Another great cake, I must say! I thought the airplane was fondant until I read the description. The entire cake looks great. The colors really stand out. Where did you purchase your background drop from? I know you have mentioned on the blog before but I just can't seem to find it. Thank you!
Rose
Amber - I actually use real wood. I had my husband take a part a few free pallets and put the boards really close together for me to use as a table and background. I'l have to post a picture of them.
Amber
Oh wow, well maybe that's why I couldn't find it, lol!! Looks great though!! Thank you!

Rose another great post. Do you ever let your fans met you for an in person visit. I have read so many of your items that it seems as if I have known you for years. Like someone I went to school with and hadnot seen since graduation. My husband and will be traveling out west from Indiana on vacation this summer. I would love to swing bye to meet you. I know you are very busy, maybe you could spare an hour. We have children in Texas, then going north to see Children in Utah. I then would like to site see in Montana. Then come back through Nebraska to go to the ICES Convention the first weekend in August. That is we will do this if the Lord willing.
KEEP UP THE AMAZING WORK. I do hope to meet you.
GOD Bless and give you Strength..
BETTY.....from Indiana.

Cake is amazing! I have a question, do you transport, or have the customer pick up? Do they/you transport it all in one piece? How is it stacked? Hope you don't mind me asking. Thanks
Rose Atwater
I don't ever deliver birthday cakes - they are picked up, already stacked, doweled and in a box. You can see more info about how I do that here: How to Stack Cakes and here: How to Box Cakes for Delivery. For wedding cakes, I do deliver but I still have them completely assembled before I leave home. 🙂
