Where has this year gone? I can NOT believe it’s already September. Although I’ve gotta confess… the cooler weather cannot get here fast enough! Anywho – last month’s cake contest was a raving success and I’m thrilled to share the August Who Takes the Cake? Winner: All Bent Out of Cake!
This cake is so amazing, right? And no one was happier about this month’s winner than my husband – a huge Star Wars fan!! The problem with a cake like this winning is that my husband then decides that I need to make him a cake like this and well… that’s not going to happen. Standing cakes like this scare me to death!
Okay… let’s get down to the nitty-gritty and learn all about Helena and her cake business All Bent Out of Cake…
August Who Takes the Cake? Winner: All Bent Out of Cake!
Here’s what Helena shared about herself and business (and pay attention… she’s only be decorating for a year and half!!! Whaaat???)):
I am a home baker, and have been cake decorating for about a year and a half. It all started when my oldest was turning 3, and I wanted to get a construction cake for him. It turns out we couldn’t really afford what I wanted, so I decided to wing it and make it myself (I rationalized it by having played with Play-Doh before–haha). It ended up turning out pretty decently considering I’ve had no training and was simply winging it.
I decided to make a second cake around the same time for a friend whose husband was being relocated overseas. We had a going away party for my makeup-loving friend, and I created my second cake ever–a makeup case cake {see it below!}. After persuading my husband that this could be a way for me, a stay-at-home/homeschooling mom, to help with our finances, I decided to start a cottage food business cakery.
Yes, I had made only two cakes, and yes, by most standards, starting a cake business after only having made two cakes is absolutely ludicrous, but somehow “winging it” has worked out. I’ve honestly never been happier in any line of work than I am now. It was as though I found my calling. I’d love to have formal training at some point, but right now, being with my young children is my real focus. I cannot express how happy I was when I saw that my cake had been chosen to be a part of the competition. After feeling like an “imposter cake decorator” for so long, it was nice to see that my winging-it was good enough to be next to some of those other AMAZING creations. Thank-you so much for allowing me to participate!
In addition to the R2D2 Cake, I asked Helena to share some of her favorite creations with us:
