This baby dedication cake design was based on a beautiful but simple invitation. There was a delicate pale pink border with pretty pink lettering. The inside of the cake was 4 layers of alternating pale pink and white cake with a hint of almond. Between each layer was creme bouquet flavored cream cheese filling, then cream cheese frosting under the marshmallow fondant!
I used my Cricut Cake to cut the border and the monogram (actually, my 14 year old son did…. he’s my right hand man in cake decorating and he likes the electronic stuff!). For these designs we used the Martha Stewart Elegant Cake cartridge.
I used a cross cutter from the 101 Wilton Cookie cutters set. I also made homemade royal icing from Americolor Meringue Powder and it worked perfectly. For the flowers, I used the Wilton Gum Paste Flowers Set.
Now, let me interject here that while the icing had perfect flavor and consistency (according the the recipe instructions), my technique is not anywhere near perfect! I am a cake decorator and I love, love, love cookies… but a cookie decorator I am not (yet!). I don’t know if my border icing was too thick or if I let my “flood” sit too long or exactly what I did wrong, but they just weren’t all pretty and smooth like I hoped. I’ll keep practicing!
