Finally tonight I’m sharing this Buttercream Ruffles Under the Sea Cake & Smash Cake. I only made it last May… as in 2013, so I’m not really running behind or anything, right? Ha!
Actually, you (my readers) decided that I would post this cake today. When I asked over on Facebook what you wanted to see, 14 out of 38 said Under the Sea! I know that doesn’t seem like a majority, but if I counted right, that was the theme that got the most votes!
You might remember seeing a very similar Under the Sea smash cake several months ago (click here to see it). I made it for Carlee’s 1st birthday photo shoot a couple of weeks before making these two cakes for her 1st birthday party.
So, let me tell you about these cakes!
I designed the cake using the decorations from Etsy as my inspiration but it’s no longer available for me to show you. However, I can show you a sample invite from that decor and Carlee’s invitation that she made using the 1st smash cake (via Cindy Thompson Photography):
Here’s a close up of all the sea creatures I put on the cake…
For the cake topper, I made the seahorse from gum paste, then let it dry and used melted chocolate to glue a lollipop stick to the back. Then I just pushed it into the cake and it stood up beautifully. The “sand” was brown sugar.
Do you have any cake decorating questions about these cakes? If so, leave me a comment and I’ll answer if I can!
