Man, last week was a doozy of a week. It rained, and rained, and rained, and rained some more. And on top of that, I had orders for cookies and cakes and cupcakes. Of course, all the rain meant power outage out here in the sticks, so I had to really hustle to get everything done and by Saturday night – I was a zombie. Anywho… let me tell you about the Cakes & Cookies & Flood Waters!
Because of the power outage, I did something I’ve never, ever done before.
I baked, made the royal icing, and decorated these Flowers & Lollipops cookies all in one day. Well… technically not one day. I started baking at 11:30pm and finished them at almost 4am the next day. I should say almost finished… I got up later that day and glued the sticks on the back (with melted chocolate) just an hour before delivering!
Remind me to never do that again! (If only I could control the weather and power outages, right??) Okay…. next up… CAKE:
This sweet & simple cake was for a baptism for Mary-Thomas. I sort of wish I had taken some pics that weren’t with my white backdrop, but I ran out of time, so these are very… white?! Haha! They were going to add fresh flowers so maybe I’ll see some of those pics later and there will be some color!
Next up – a wedding & groom’s cake!
While I love a traditional white wedding cake, I also love it when bride’s choose to have color on their cake and this Ombre Pink Wedding Cake is no exception! I love the POP of color!! It’s just so much fun! Get more details on this cake here!
And then the groom’s cake… it was a new design (for me). My very first barrel cake:
I’m always a little nervous when doing a design, especially a carved cake that I’ve never done before, but this one came together like a dream! It was 6 layers of strawberry cake – filled with vanilla buttercream, the decorated with Satin Ice & Wilton fondants. I brainstormed for way too long before it occurred to me to hand-paint the lettering on! DOH!!
I also had an order for some plain cupcakes but I didn’t get a picture. With the weather, I was rushing to get out the door and make deliveries between waves of rain and I completely forgot!
Speaking of rain, the rest of my week was pretty consumed with worrying about floating away. If ya’ll have been watching the news this week, you know that the deep south (Mississippi, Louisiana, and Texas in particular) has gotten oh-so-much rain. I live about 50 yards from a creek and this is what it looked like Thursday:
That’s my neighbor’s house there on the right (his house sits between mine and the creek) and it has had several inches of water in it before. The flooding was even worse on Saturday but I didn’t get a picture. As far as I know, he didn’t end up with the creek inside his house this time around, but it’s always scary when the water is like this!
So that’s that! Let me know if you have any questions about the cookies or cakes and I hope you all have a fantastic week!
