Description

This classic Southern sweet potato pie is made with fresh sweet potatoes, warm spices, and brown sugar in a buttery crust… an easy, old-fashioned holiday dessert!

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 (9 inch) unbaked pie crust
  • 1 lb. sweet potatoes
  • 1/2 cup butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 tsp. nutmeg
  • 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 1 tsp. vanilla extract
  • Whipped cream for topping, optional

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F.
  2. Poke the sweet potatoes with a fork and wrap in foil.
  3. Bake on a baking sheet for 40-50 minutes, until fork-tender.
  4. Cool the potatoes completely, then peel.
  5. Lower your oven temp to 350°F.
  6. In a medium mixing bowl, mash together the sweet potatoes and butter until smooth.
  7. Whisk in the sugar, brown sugar, milk, eggs, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.
  8. Pour the filling into the pie crust, careful not to overfill. Discard any extra pie filling.
  9. Bake for 50-60 minutes, until the edges are set and the center has a slight jiggle.
  10. Cool the pie at room temperature, then chill in the refrigerator before serving.

Notes

  • Store covered with plastic wrap in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
  • Baking (not boiling) the sweet potatoes gives the filling a deeper flavor and creamier texture.
