Description

Crusting Cream Cheese Frosting has an amazing cream cheese flavor and is stiff enough for cake decorating. This perfect buttercream is made with simple ingredients and is always a client favorite. It pairs perfectly with vanilla cake, red velvet cake, chocolate cake, carrot cake, and more. It really is the best cream cheese frosting!

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 8 oz. salted butter (2 sticks), at room temperature
  • 1/2 cup Crisco* shortening (just under 4 oz. on a kitchen scale)
  • 8 oz. cream cheese, at room temperature
  • 3 lbs powdered sugar
  • 1 Tablespoon of vanilla extract
  • 2-4 Tablespoons of milk (add to get consistency to pipe or spread)

Instructions

  1. Place the butter and Crisco in a large mixing bowl. Mix on low speed for 2 to 3 minutes, until smooth and creamy.
  2. Add the vanilla extract and cream cheese. Mix again on low speed until everything is fully combined and very smooth.
  3. Slowly add the powdered sugar, a little at a time, mixing on low speed until it is all incorporated. The frosting will be very thick at this stage.
  4. Add milk, one tablespoon at a time, mixing after each addition until the frosting reaches your desired consistency for spreading or decorating. Usually 2 to 3 tablespoons works well.
  5. Once the frosting is smooth and fluffy, it’s ready to use.

Notes

  • If it’s too thick, add a small amount of milk or heavy cream to get a thinner consistency.
  • If it’s too soft, add more powdered sugar.
  • Always mix on low speed at the end to reduce air bubbles.
  • For best results, make sure your ingredients are at room temperature. Cold cream cheese will leave lumps and make it harder to get a smooth finish.
