Description

Skip the store-bought packets and mix up your own homemade taco seasoning mix in just a few minutes. This easy taco seasoning recipe uses basic spices like chili powder, ground cumin, garlic powder, and onion powder to create a bold, flavorful seasoning blend that’s perfect for any taco night. This homemade version is simple, budget-friendly, and skips the cheap filler, excess sodium, and additives you’ll often find at the grocery store. Once you start making your own taco seasoning, it’s hard to go back.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 tbsp chili powder
  • 1 tsp cumin
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1/2 tsp oregano
  • 1/2 tsp coriander
  • 1 tsp kosher salt
  • 1/2 tsp ground black pepper
  • 2 tsp cornstarch (for thickening, optional)

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, whisk together the chili powder, cumin, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, oregano, coriander, kosher salt, black pepper, and cornstarch (if using) until well combined.
  2. Set aside.
  3. To make taco meat, heat a large skillet over medium-high heat.
  4. Add 1 pound of ground beef and cook, breaking it up with a spoon, until fully browned, about 5 to 7 minutes.
  5. Drain any excess grease from the skillet.
  6. Sprinkle the seasoning over the meat and stir to coat evenly.
  7. Pour in the 2⁄3 cup of water and mix until well combined.
  8. Bring the mixture to a simmer.
  9. Reduce the heat to medium-low and cook for another 5 to 7 minutes, or until the sauce thickens slightly.
