Happy Labor Day! I don’t really have a “Labor Day” related cake, but I do have this bright, happy Electric Rainbow Buttercream Ruffles Cake! (Watch my very amateur video tutorial here on How to decorate a Messy Ruffles Buttercream Cake!)
Since every holiday can always stand a little more “happy” – I figured this cake would be perfect!
The tiers of this cake were 6″ and 8″ round; each tier about 4″ tall with 2 layers of cake. The top tier of this cake was strawberry cake and the bottom tier was chocolate cake. All of the filling and frosting was vanilla buttercream.
For the “9” on the front of the cake, I rolled out a rope of gum paste then flattened it slightly and let it dry. After it was hardened, I painted it with edible silver gel/paint then dusted it with silver disco dust.
I had planned to stand it up on top of the cake (attaching a wire like seen in this tutorial) but if you look closely, you can see the cracks near the bottom where it broke when I tried to stand it up. Because I didn’t have time to make another one, I opted to stick it on the front of the top tier and it looked just as cute!
However, if I had to do this cake again today, now I’d use a white chocolate number topper and it would be a lot less likely to break!
So that’s it, I think! This cake was for Ally Beth and you can see her Zebra Stripes and Peace Sign cake from last year here!
