Well, I had big plans to make special treats for St. Patrick's Day yesterday, but life got busy and the date slipped up on me in a blink - so it never happened. Then I got to thinking... could I share anything new that would be related to St. Patrick's Day? The first cake that I found when browsing through my pics was this Elmo Rainbow Chevron Cake!
Rainbows? St. Patrick's Day? Of course! Works for me! But then I got distracted with frosting the cupcakes for my local giveaway...
then taking my kids to the local (tiny town) St. Patrick's Day parade...
then I had to get groceries and do an errand for my brother and then I just wanted to rest like my kiddo...
Snuggled up with a cozy blanket and eating Cheetos. Ha! Isn't that the cutest kid ever? Yes, I think so!
So, this Rainbow Chevron Elmo cake didn't get posted yesterday when I planned, but I'm finally finishing the post today. Better late than never, right?
Okay - so let me tell you about the cake!
First, there was a smash cake to go with it! 🙂 This was a tiny little 4" round cake (single layer). First, I cut out the black mouth shape from Satin Ice Black fondant and stuck it on the cake with a little smear of buttercream.
Then I used a large star tip (sorry - can't remember the exact one) and piped on all the red fur. The red frosting was pretty warm, so it didn't hold it's shape very well, but then again, Elmo's "fur" is not all that neat, so I didn't stress over it.
I used a big round tip (the biggest one in this Ateco large tube set) to pipe the eyes, then used a small "dot" of black fondant to do the pupils. For the nose, it was just a ball of orange homemade marshmallow fondant that I added a little oval shape to and stuck it on!
And then the big cake! It was inspired by Karleigh's dress that was made by CookieBella Creations from Etsy (or find her here on Facebook and tell her I sent you!)...
Hannah (Karleigh's mom) asked that I use the chevron on the bottom to match the dress then she wanted Elmo "popping out" of a bow on top!
To do the chevron on the bottom, I used a cutter from Not Just Cakes by Annie. I absolutely adore their cutters and own several of them! Then I used a silicone pearl mold to do the border with Satin Ice Red Vanilla fondant.
For the top tier, I covered it in the bright sky blue homemade marshmallow fondant, then used Fox Run Alphabet Cutters for her name and I hand-made the "2" to look like a crayon. Again I used the silicone pearl mold to do the border with yellow marshmallow fondant.
And then the top... doesn't it just make you happy? You can see how I make my bow loops in this How to Make a Poofy Fondant Bow Tutorial. I don't have pics, but here are the steps to do a flat character like him:
- Roll out fondant - maybe 2-3 mm thick. I used Satin Ice Red Vanilla fondant with tylose mixed in. You could also use gum paste if you prefer.
- Rub the fondant (or gum paste) with a thin layer of shortening
- Lay a piece of wax paper on it
- Print out a template or coloring sheet for what you need - I found an Elmo by searching "Elmo Coloring Sheet"
- Lay the template over the wax paper - tape down the edges if necessary
- Use an Xacto knife to cut it out
- Let it dry until hard (I prefer at least a day or two).
To add details, I used a black food marker to trace the outside edges, his face/head, etc. then used a tiny amount of white and orange fondant to add his eyes and nose.
And that's it!! I think I covered all the details!! Do you have any questions about how to do this cake or smash cake? Did I miss anything? I love to hear from readers, so leave me comment if I can help out!

Do you have another source for the Chevron cutters? I loved her site but everything she offers is out of stock.

p.s. the mustache cutters were perfect!

With Not Just Cakes by Annie, she announces when their stock is full and when it'll go live so that customers can get their stuff. I think you can sign up on their website for notifications, check here: http://shop.notjustcakesbyannie.com/about-us/. It's worth the wait unless you need the cutter right away! I do have another chevron cutter that I got on CheapCookieCutters.com. It's metal and only one-sided, so it's a little more difficult to get consistent cuts, but it'll work if you need something now!

Rose, I love ur cakes! Can u give me an easy tip to cut the chevron design? Thanks
Lee
Do you have any tips for using the cutters to make the chevron pattern? I have both sizes of the open ended chevron cutters from Annie's. I tried making one long pattern to fit around the cake, but then it kept breaking. Maybe I rolled my fondant too thin. I decided to just do it in sections the length of the cutter. Do you let it set up any before you put it on the cake? I didn't, but I was thinking maybe I should have. I made a baby shower cake last week and used the cutters for the bottom tier. Everyone loved it, but I wanted it to be neater. Any tips?
Thank you!
Rose
I use a method similar to the Wax Paper Transfer Method in the Craftsy Class: Clean & Simple Cake Design. It involves coating wax paper with shortening, rolling out the fondant on it, then cutting out the patterns on the wax paper. Then you can lift the strips and place them on the cake without stretching by leaving them on the wax paper, then pulling it away. I hope that makes a little sense.

Thank you for responding and always being so willing to offer advise...So, when you do the chevron pattern with multiple colors like on the Elmo cake, how do you roll the different colors? Do you roll each one on a separate piece of wax paper? Thanks again!
Rose
Yes, I did them one at a time!
Lee
Thanks! I will try that next time!
