Last night, after an exhausting week and with 1000 things still on my to-do list, I copped out at the last minute and made this ridiculously easy Galactic Starveyors VBS Galaxy Cake for our Vacation Bible School commencement today.
I took this single picture about 10 seconds before cutting into the cake and bam – that was it! Don’t worry – I volunteered to make the cake so there wasn’t a disappointed paying customer on the other end, but still, I was a little upset with me for not finding time to do more.
I did snap a few more pics of the leftovers when we got home (below) but before I share those, let me give you a few details about the cake. Just in case you want to recreate this amazing piece of cake art 😉
I make fun (of myself), but I seriously thought it turned out pretty darn cute considering the circumstances and I truly believe it’s a cake anybody can make if you need an easy “galaxy” design.
So here we go:
Details about the Galaxy Cake:
- It was dark chocolate cake baked in a 10×15 Magic Line cake pan (my favorite brand cake pans!!). I wrapped the pans in Bake Even strips (see my homemade version here) and used two flower nails as “heating cores” (see here for more details).
- It was covered in vanilla buttercream. I used a 9″ offset spatula and swirled it around… easy-peasy!
- I used Wilton Color Mist Black and Blue sprays to get the “galaxy” look. Or what I’m calling “the galaxy”.
- For the finishing touch, I sprinkled edible gold glitter stars all over.
I planned to come back and “VBS 2017” to the top with maybe the scripture for the week… but 3:30am got the best of me. I actualy forgot the cake at home altogether. When I realized my mistake, I had to ask my husband to run back home for it before church
This girl was tired.
The good news is… nobody cared that the cake was not intricately decorated with a galaxy and planets. Nobody even cared that it wasn’t finished with at least a logo or words about VBS. They ate almost the whole cake without any complaint at all!
Everybody just enjoyed some cake and drinks and celebrating our kids finishing up VBS. Which made me very, very happy!
Do you have any questions about this cake? Have you ever put a design together on the fly and it come out okay? Leave me a comment!
