To celebrate her husband's birthday, my friend Narshunda asked that I make him a Harley-Davidson cake.
I've done one other Harley-Davidson cake - it was buttercream and I was not altogether happy with it.
But this one... well, I love the way it turned out! I don't think I've ever covered a cake entirely in black fondant - but it was perfect for this design.
Then the fire - well, my boys thought it was awesome and again, perfect for the Harley theme!
The lettering, on the other hand... not so neat, but not too bad considering I had to hand cut them!
This cake was chocolate cake with vanilla buttercream filling.

Wow! That is another amazing cake! I have a friend's birthday coming up and she loves harley davidson. I would love to make a cake like this, but know I couldn't pull off those letters. I love the flames too, they are awesome!!

Thank you Amber!! I tried to use some letter cutters I had, but they were just too wide, so I ended up cutting by hand (BIG PAIN), but it was worth the extra effort!

Cute! My husband would love this cake, too...maybe for his birthday next month, unless he decides he wants a big cookie again instead! 🙂

P.S. I don't even dare ask how many bottles of gel food coloring you had to go through to get that much fondant a true black color! Ugh. Or did you use pre-made this time and buy the kind already tinted black?
Rose
For black, I actually always use Satin Ice Black Vanilla fondant. It tastes good, it's not hard to work with... and of course, it saves me the trouble of mixing a gallon of black gel into fondant! 🙂

I make my own fondant (marshmellow fondant) & when I need black I always may chocolate fondant so its already dark from the coca & then it doesn't need too much black 🙂
Rose
What a great idea! But sadly, I never found a chocolate marshmallow fondant recipe that worked very well... I'd love to try yours if you don't mind sharing!

For these, I started out with letters cut using this Fox Run Alphabet set. But I quickly realized that those letters were too big for my cake, so I individually cut them down to size, trimming off the sides, tops and bottoms of each letter! It was a labor of love!!

Do you have a template for the flames? Did you mix colors in the fondant?
Rose
I do not - I think I free-handed them!
