Description

The easiest way to boil sweet potatoes on the stovetop! Ready in 25 minutes and perfect for a quick side dish, mashing, or your favorite sweet potato recipe.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 900g / 2 lb sweet potatoes
  • 1.4 litres / 6 cups water, or enough to cover the sweet potatoes
  • 1 teaspoon fine sea salt

Instructions

  1. Peel the sweet potatoes, then cut them into evenly sized pieces, approximately 2.5-3cm / 1-1ΒΌ inches. Keeping the pieces a similar size will help them cook evenly.
  2. Place the sweet potatoes in a large saucepan and add enough cold water to cover them by approximately 2.5cm / 1 inch.
  3. Add the salt, then place the saucepan over medium-high heat and bring the water to a boil.
  4. Once boiling, reduce the heat slightly so the water maintains a steady simmer. Cook the sweet potatoes for approximately 12-15 minutes, depending on the size of the pieces.
  5. Check the sweet potatoes by inserting a fork or the tip of a sharp knife into one of the larger pieces. It should slide in easily without the sweet potato falling apart.
  6. Drain the sweet potatoes thoroughly in a colander and allow them to sit for a minute or two so any excess moisture can evaporate.
  7. Serve the sweet potatoes as they are, season to taste, or mash them while still warm.
