After that weekend a few weeks ago where I did 11 cakes (ELEVEN!), I’m glad to say things have gotten back to my current “normal” pace and I only had 2 orders last weekend and 2 orders this weekend. It’s a good thing too because I also had a husband still working 12 hour nights, a daughter who’s been really, really sick and a commitment with the non-profit that I volunteer with.
Oh… and I ordered a really cute t-shirt that was on sale for 50% off… woot-woot!!
First up – the cakes, of course. Last weekend I had two orders. And they were so very different from each other. First, this classy, elegant, gold and cream cake to celebrate a 60th birthday!
There was a miscommunication where I thought I was putting a bow on top. I actually did put the bow on top, then had second thoughts and was unsure of what had been decided on, so I sent a pic and she confirmed that she did not want the bow! I have gone back and forth since then on which version was my favorite, but either way – I loved the cake!
What do you think? Bow or no bow? (I should add that she ended up putting a flower on top, but I don’t have a pic of it with the flower)…
My other order was for a Luau / Pool Party cake and cupcakes to celebrate a 1st birthday! The cake was designed to match the birthday girls’ t-shirt for her party.
It was so much fun making this bright and cheery cake for Summer! It was a small 5″ round Grass Skirt with gum paste Hibiscus flowers for her smash cake… and then 3 dozen matching cupcakes in all the bright colors!
Fast forward to this weekend and my first order I finished was also a 1st birthday and the theme was TOOLS for Mathis!
I made the “block of wood” cake with tools (very, very similar to my son’s cake a few weeks ago). Then I made a cute little smash cake with a (modeling chocolate) leaf blower on top!
It’s a replica of Mathis’ Daddy’s real leaf blower that he’s completely obsessed with 🙂 Isn’t that fun?!
Also… 3 dozen cupcakes with tiny chocolate tools! I was worried that these would be a nightmare, but they really weren’t too bad. I used chocolate molds and made them all with white almond bark and Wilton candy melts – then sprayed the white ones silver with Wilton Silver Spray Mist. (find the chocolate molds I used for the cake and cupcakes here, here, here and here.
After I finished up all of that, I made this Avenger’s Cake:
It was an 8″ round vanilla cake for Aiden’s 4th birthday! You can see other sweets I’ve made for Aiden here, here, and here.
Soo… after all of that, we spend this past Saturday at Briar Ridge Children’s Ministries Field Day (Grand Opening). It was more than a 3 hour drive each way, so we drove most of the way Friday evening then stayed in a hotel for the night.
(we stopped for Krispy Kreme Doughnuts on the way… a real treat for us!!)
Because of Richy’s horrible work schedule and working all night long every night (gone from home 14+ hours each day… from 6pm until 8am), he thought staying up as long as he could stand it would be the best way to tire himself out and maybe be able to transition back to sleeping at night… so he had only slept 3 hours out of the past 30 when we got to the hotel.
He did manage to get 5-6 hours of decent sleep before he woke up at 3am… and then he was tossing and turning until 7am when we got up and started getting ready to go on to the camp. I have never had to work nights so it’s so hard for me to imagine how hard it is to switch your body clock from days to nights and back again. It’s so, so hard for him.
Aaaah, I digress. I forgot to get my camera out for most the day, but here is one picture I took as everyone gathered as a group just before lunch. You can learn more about Briar Ridge Children’s Ministries here.
Alrighty… that’s it! I hope you have a fabulous week and I look forward to sharing lots of sweetness with you soon!
Happy Caking!
Rose
Thanks Rose this encourages me that I can make more cakes I. A short time. I’m still nervous when being asked to make wedding cakes. My confidence level is not where it should be
The more you do, the better and faster you’ll get! Practice, practice, practice!
Hi Rose, I love your cakes and have followed you for quiet a while. I noticed you’ve changed your cake boards and they aren’t covered in just foil anymore. I saw a post you did with a glitter paper, but what are you using for the solid colors? Is it just fondant?
I use several different things these days. Glitter paper is probably my go-to thing, but I also use fondant, colored foils, pearlescent paper, etc. On the cakes in this post I used cream fondant (for the gold/cream cake), pink pearlescent scrapbooking paper for the Luau cake, then fondant for the diamond plating on the tools cake (lavender fondant sprayed silver) and fondant again on the Avengers cake.
On the wedding cake how did you make that gold?
I sprayed them with PME Gold spray then a light coat of Pearl Spray over that. Then I used a brush while it was still wet and brushed over it for a little texture. You can find the PME Sprays here: http://amzn.to/2ddAVwA
Love the gold cake. How did you get the gold on the fondant?

Hi Rose
As always love your cakes they are amazing. Have you made any moist coconut cakes by any chance?
I do have a great recipe but I haven’t had a chance to post it on the blog yet!
Wow…you have been busy! Your cakes are beautiful. Great job!
Thank you!!
You’re a true inspiration to me. Your work is so fabulous, and you’re able to juggle kids and a husband through it all.Right now I’m at a crossroad as my confidence has taken a hit.I basically do cakes for family and friends, and a friend of the family asked me to do their wedding cake.Everything, I mean everything went wrong!! I had to deliver to a venue 3hours away and the cake shifted and all my decorations fell off.I was mortified!!! What a disaster!! I cried, and felt such a failure. The cake was properly reinforced with dowels.I don’t know what went wrong.Anyhow as a result I’m scared to try again.Help!!
Awww, I’m so sorry this happened to you. There are so many factors that could cause something like this – there’s just no way for me to know. I share a post about one of my biggest fails here: https://rosebakes.com/biggest-cake-failure/ Maybe it will encourage you!
