Attention college and/or sports fans… here’s a fun new cake! This cake was made for a pre-teen girl who absolutely loves basketball and Louisiana State University!
I did a wood floor to imitate a basketball court on the bottom tier. I used Satin Ice Dark/Chocolate brown fondant on the bottom tier, then used a wood grain mat to give it texture and I used a sharp knife to score the boards.
You can see some wood grain texture mats below (I’m adding these links thanks to Yaneri from Sweet Bakes of Mine who asked the question in the comments!) :
- This is the specific one I used is here at Country Kitchen Sweet Art: Wood Grain Impression Mat
- There’s also a set on Amazon that has a smaller wood grain mat and it looks more like a floor – with boards and tiny nail marks. I like to use it for some applications and it’s here: Woodgrain Fondant Impression Mat
- Then there’s this one from FMM that includes a tree bark impression mat (wood grain) and a brick wall impression mat here: Tree Bark and Brick Wall Impression mat
After all the lines/texture was added, I mixed some brown gel coloring with light corn syrup to paint and make it glossy!
The letters are my favorite FMM Funky Alphabet cutters! I cut them out in gold and then traced them on the purple!
I used a Tupperware Forget-Me-Not Jr. set to mold rice cereal treats into a perfect ball. Then after it hardened a bit, I covered it in orange MMF. I used numbers from the Wilton 101 Cookie cutters set for the “12”.
The cake is covered and decorated in all homemade marshmallow fondant and Satin Ice Dark/Chocolate brown fondant. I used regal purple gel coloring and gold mixed with a little lemon yellow and a touch of orange for the “gold”.
You can see all of my favorite cake tools here!
