I’m not really into scary monsters or things that frighten children, but I do love a fun-loving monster (think Monsters Inc. monsters) and I absolutely fell in love with this Monster Cake & Cookies.
Let me tell you all about them!
First up – the cake! This was for Hayes’ 1st birthday and I really wanted to make it bold and bright and happy! For the bottom tier, I made orange homemade marshmallow fondant, then used white polka dots (cut with a small round cutter).
The middle tier was covered in homemade marshmallow fondant then I used a Not Just Cakes by Annie Chevron Cutter to do the blue chevron pattern.
Then the top tier was covered in Satin Ice Red Fondant and I used a plaque cutter for the plaque holding Hayes’ name. The letters were cut using simple Fox Run Alphabet cutters. I used the same silicone pearl bead mold for the border again!
For each monster, I took a ball of fondant, smooshed it flat, then used a ball tool to drag out the edges for the top of each head. Then I added the details… mouth, teeth, feet, ears, eyes, etc. I made each of them a different!
The last thing I can tell you about the cake is that it was 4″, 6″, and 8″ tiers of vanilla cake filled and frosted with vanilla buttercream before being covered and decorated with fondant (some homemade and some Satin Ice).
And then there were the cookies!
These were my roll-out sugar cookie recipe decorated with royal icing and candy eyes! There really was no rhyme or reason to the faces… I just wanted them to be bright and happy and non-scary monster cookies! Obviously, they were done with a generic round cookie cutter and that’s all there is to tell ya!
Cookies are not my area of expertise but you can see a few more details about how I decorate cookies on this Dinosaur Cookies post.
And that’s it!
