Whew... what a Monday. The next time I decide to start our new homeschool year on a Monday, smack me. Seriously.
Not only did I choose a Monday (the worst day of the week IMHO), I chose a Monday where I also had a 4-H meeting and speech therapy appointment and errands to run at the library, grocery store, and consignment shop, and I'm "hormonal".... enough said.
Sometimes I make really dumb decisions.
Anyway, it's 10:15 pm and we just finished up supper and homechooling about an hour ago (shameful). So now I sit down for my therapy... looking at cake pictures and writing and mindlessly deleting piles of emails... yeah, I live my life in the fast lane!
So here goes... a Pink and Orange Mod 40th Birthday Cake. Is "mod" the right description? Or should I call it retro? I'm never on top of the latest terminology for trends...
I have no idea why, but I only had a few pics of this cake and they were all the same and a little grainy. Maybe my battery was dead that day and I used another camera... who knows?
There's not a lot to say, I guess. On the inside, it was Neapolitan cake and the filling and frosting was crusting cream cheese buttercream.
I had liberty to do any design I wanted, as long as it was fun and bright and "40", so I decided to do a combo of stripes and polka dots. It's one of my favorite looks and I rarely get to put it on cake.
I used homemade marshmallow fondant for the pink and orange fondant, then used my ribbon cutter to do the stripes and a small round cookie cutter for the dots.
I free-handed the number topper with an Xacto knife, mixing some tylose into the fondant so it would dry hard. You can read more about how I make number toppers here.
And that's really all there is to say... the cake was simple, but I loved the overall look and was very happy with it!
How was your Monday? I hope better than mine!! Do you have any questions about the cake? Leave me a comment!!

Ahh Rose!! You are a girl after my own heart...trying to juggle homeschooling, errands, appointments, LIFE and CAKE!!!! Ha Ha! I LOVE your retro (yes, I think this is the right term!!) cake. Pink and orange is one of my favourite colour combinations. The circles and stripes are awesome. I LOVE how you are still homeschooling at 9:30pm...I have usually given up after 3:00!! Love AnnaX

Oh sweet Anna -- we do have lots in common, huh? Thank you, as always, for your kind words. Love you, Rose

Having been homeschooled, and being a baker myself I know what a super Mom you are, your children are truly blessed!! This cake looks great!!!! You have taught me so and I am always looking forward to your post. I do have a question for you…. I am always worried about my pricing and was wondering what you would charge someone for this type of cake?

Hi there,
Sorry just wondering if this cake is buttercream or fondant under the pink & orange decoration? Thank you.
Rose
It is buttercream underneath.
