I was browsing some old pictures this week and stumbled across this cake I finished back in July of 2012. As I scanned through the pics, it occurred to me that I had never shared them.
So, this is an old cake… if you call an year and a a half “old”, but I thought it was super cute and wanted to share (except the smash cake was not smooth at all… I don’t remember what my problem was with it).
This pink & green Mod Circles Monkey Cake was for Matti’s 1st birthday! I’ve done monkey cakes before – but this was a new design and it was fun to put together!
The best part of it… I got to make a sculpted monkey for the cake topper. Actually, I made two!! One for the big cake and one for the smash cake…
I love the “mod” look – alternating the green and pink circles around the bottom tier, and then adding the flowers to soften the whole look!
Again, not sure what happened with the smash cake. I don’t remember it looking that lumpy and bumpy when I made it (and for some reason, I only had a handful of pics that you see here), but it’s looking pretty rough in that one picture.
I made all the little flowers with the flower cutters/punch from the Wilton Gum Paste Flowers set, and for the “1”, I printed a one from online, then used an Xacto blade to cut it out of Satin Ice gum paste. You can read more about how I make number toppers here.
I had to look it up in my records, but the cake was marbled pink and green vanilla cake (sort of this tie-dyed look, but only pink and green). All decorations were homemade marshmallow fondant except for the brown – it was Satin Ice Dark Chocolate Brown Fondant.
And that’s it – I wish I had more pics or could remember more details… but I don’t! Do you have any questions? Leave me a comment!
