For this baby shower cake, I was asked to do something simple, but elegant and including the baby’s monogram.
So I went with the pale pink and white color scheme. I made a fondant bow to top it off… and made the bottom tier stand out with bold stripes and tiny sugar pearls.
I used my extruder to get tiny ropes of fondant to make the letters, and I laid them on a cutout that I made using a flower cutter (slightly smooshed to make the cloud shape). I also trimmed the edges of the plaque with tiny sugar pearls.
And then… she also wanted baby carriage cookies!!
I used the carriage cookie cutter to cut the cookies, and again to cut pink fondant. Then I added the white top and wheels (cut with flower cutters) and used royal icing for the accents. The recipe is a wonderful roll-out sugar cookie recipe!
This cake was vanilla cake with vanilla frosting and the decorations were homemade marshmallow fondant.

So very pretty Rose.
Thank you! xoxo
Gorgeous! How many cake layers are in each tier? How many inches are they?
Each tier has 2 layers of cake, just under 2″ per layer. With the filling (I do lots of filling), each tier is almost 4″.
Thanks! And what size cake pans did you use?
So beautiful and elegant! I love those cookies, too – for someone who doesn’t “do” cookies, you sure are doing a great job on all the ones you’ve tackled lately!
I am still just so impressed with how smooth your fondant covered cakes are. My fondant (I use Satin Ice) always seems to have issues, and I just can’t seem to figure out how to cover a cake in fondant well yet. You have no bumps, no tears, no elephant skin. I have “covering a cake with fondant” envy!
Thank you Megan!! Have you ever tried “The Mat”? I use mostly homemade fondant and I haven’t ever had tons of problems, but since I got “The Mat” – it’s soooo much easier!! I absolutely love it and would recommend it to anybody who does cakes on a regular (or semi-regular) basis!! You can see it here and be sure to watch the video!
Ahhh yes, “the mat!” More like the “ELUSIVE” mat for me 🙂 When I first began reading your blog at the beginning of the year (forever indebted to Kristen for telling me about you!), I saw your list of “must haves” and set my sights on getting “the mat”. Well, then I saw they had a brand new line of them coming out. I pre-ordered it back in April I think. It was supposed to ship the first of June, but they have had lots of production setbacks. Supposedly they should be shipping out end of July now, so I am anxiously waiting my arrival of “the mat”! I was so bummsed out that it didn’t arrive in time for me to do my friend’s Very Hungry Caterpillar cake. I think it would have made my life so much easier…at least I’m hoping that’s the case! Otherwise if I still have issues….I don’t know where to go from there, other than more time and experience.
I hit enter before I finished the first comment! Oop!
soooo very dainty & pretty!
Very pretty Rose!!! You’re making rethink Satin Ice. I’ve made marshmallow fondant before and it really is good. Think that I will go back to my first love. I like the idea that you combine both fondants. Thanks for sharing your creative secrets with us.
How did you get the loops of you bow to not collapse in on themselves (stay standing)? I don’t work with fondant very often, but my niece wanted a zebra striped cake with a pink fondant bow and the number 13 coming out of the top. I think we saw something similar on your page. I didn’t know how to keep the loops open, so I used pieces of toothpicks 😛
Check out my post here on how to make a poofy bow! If you still have questions, leave me another comment!! Thanks for visiting!
