When a friend from college contacted me on Facebook and asked me about helping her pull off a pirate themed party for her young boys, I was thrilled to help out! After chatting back and forth for a bit… we came up with a plan for me to make these Pirate Cake Topper & Pirate Cupcake Toppers!
The only catch was – she lives hours and hours away, so actually doing a cake and/or cupcakes for her wasn’t possible… instead she asked if I could do the toppers and mail them to her!
I had never mailed anything like this, so I was super nervous about getting everything to her in one piece, but in the end, it all turned out great!
First I made these 3-D Pirate cake toppers. I made one for each boy – one turning 6 and one turning 7. They were made from gum paste…. and this is the only good picture I have 🙁 .
I should note, I made these back in August when (a) my camera was broken and (b) we were headed out of town before the hurricane got here, so I was in a big hurry!
For the pirate face cupcake toppers, I used a lemon cookie cutter (of all things) for the head/face shape with ears.
I added bandanas in red, green and blue, some with polka dots and some with stripes. I used the lemon cookie cutter to get the shape right and a tiny teardrop cutter (from thisminiature cutters set) for the “knot”.
Then I made the nose from a tiny ball of fondant and drew on the eyes, rosy cheeks, freckles and eyes with Americolor Food Markers.
Do you have any questions about these toppers? If so, leave me a comment!
