Today I want to share Pirate Flag Smash Cakes and Pirate Face Cupcake Toppers!
These were also done back in February when I was super-duper stressed and while I’m tagging this as a twins party (it would certainly work as a fun twin boys theme) – for some reason I seem to remember that it wasn’t for twins. But I’m half crazy… so who knows… maybe someone who knows will set me straight!
Anywho… first up, let’s talk about the smash cakes for the (possibly twin) boys! Ha!
They were single layer 6″ vanilla cakes covered in vanilla buttercream. I cut strips of red fondant (Satin Ice Vanilla Red) using my ribbon cutter and then wrapped them up and over each cake to the center.
For the pirate flags on top, I cut out a rectangle piece of black fondant (Satin Ice Black Vanilla fondant) and laid it on a piece of foam. Then I used a ball tool (I like the metal ones) to “stretch” the edges and tear them – to make them look worn.
All of the white was homemade marshmallow fondant. I hand cut the skull heads and used “7” from this alphabet/numbers cutters set for the bones (I just distorted them a bit). For the names, I used Tappit block letter cutters. I attached all the parts to the black flag with tiny dots of sugar glue.
In addition to the cakes, I made 20 pirate face cupcakes. I gave some details on how to make these pirate face cupcake toppers here – they’re really easy and fun!
For this order, all the pirates’ bandannas were red… some with stripes and some with polka dots.
Some had an eye patch and some did not! Again, read over here for more details.
Do you have any questions about the cupcake toppers or smash cakes? Please leave me a comment and I’ll help out if I can!
