It’s day 7 of the Write 31 Days Challenge and gosh… what.a.day. Have you ever had a bad day? Like a really bad day? The kind of day where you almost ruin a wedding…. twice? Rustic Naked Wedding Cake with Fresh Fruit
Yeah – so let me tell you about my day. I rolled over this morning, glanced at the clock and realized I had slept til 9. Awesome. I didn’t have big plans for the day… I was going to take it easy until the afternoon, then start working on my two wedding cake orders for tomorrow.
Before getting up and going, I grabbed my phone off my nightstand to check in with the world. As I was scrolling through Facebook, I come across a post – from one friend to another – that read, “Happy Wedding Day!”
I kept scrolling… then I paused, scrolled back up and realized that one of those friends was my customer. The customer I was doing a wedding cake for. Wait… Happy Wedding Day… today? I had it written on my calendar for tomorrow.
This was not happening.
I flew out of the bed like a crazy person… called my sister to see if the wedding was, in fact, today (because she’s “in the know” on all the small town news), then temporarily lost my mind when she confirmed my fears that the wedding was TODAY.
How in the world did I write it on the wrong day? That’s the kind of mistakes that nightmares are made of in my line of work. I was freaking out!! (the only thing I can think of to explain my mistake was that 99% of my weddings are on Saturdays and I wrote it on that day out of habit)
But then I took a deep breath and thought it through. First and most importantly I thanked God that He allowed me to see that post (because otherwise, I’m not sure I’d have realized my error until the bride called to ask where her cake was).
Then I went over the order in my head… it was for a small 3-tiered naked cake (4″, 6″ and 8″ tiers). The cakes were already baked, because I followed my routine of baking on Thursday night, and I had all day to pull it together.
Whew. It was gonna be okay. I could do it.
All I needed to do was cover the board, make buttercream, tort & fill the cake, stack the layers, then the tiers (using bubble tea straws & a dowel rod)… and crumb coat & scrape down the outside. For the photos, I added the fresh fruit & dusted it with powdered sugar… done!
I actually finished the cake a full two hours before I was supposed to deliver it. I was relaxed. But not too relaxed. My husband and two older kids (ie. babysitters) were not home, so I needed my 19 year old to drive and I had to load up all of my little kiddos too.
We ended up leaving home a little later than I planned (because KIDS), but still with plenty of time to spare on the delivery. All was well.
Until it wasn’t.
The church was less than 10 miles from my house. Most of my cake deliveries are 40-50 miles. This delivery was supposed to be a breeze.
Because the cake was small, I opted to hold it on my lap for the short drive. Everything was just fine until we came around a curve and there was a school bus IN!!OUR!! LANE!!! My son (who was driving) had to swerve huge, run off the road and hit the brakes all at once.
In slow motion, I saw the cake dramatically leaning forward… I was about to witness a disaster!! I had to use my hand on the front side of the cake to stop it from crashing into the dash. And I screamed.
Thank goodness no one was hurt and we didn’t actually wreck, but the cake was no longer standing up straight. It didn’t have any major damage, but it was leaning just enough to make me worry.
We got to a place where we could stop and I gently adjusted the cake to get it standing up straight again. It was there that I noticed one layer of the cake actually cracked from the pressure of my hand, but again…. thank God it was a rustic/naked cake design, so I was able to smooth it out with frosting and it wasn’t even noticeable.
I set it up (slightly later than I hoped), breathed a deep, deep sigh of relief, then came home and crashed from the emotional roller coaster!
SO there you go… the kind of day where I almost ruined a wedding…. twice!
