I think there's some big basketball thing going on today (maybe a NCAA championship or something?), so I thought I'd share a basketball cake. Although this is not a college basketball cake... it's a school themed basketball cake for girls celebrating their 13th birthday!
These girls attend Cathedral School in Natchez and they have lots of school spirit! They wanted their birthday cake to reflect their school colors (green and black) and their love of basketball!
As I started thinking of how to design this cake, the Ole Miss Hello Kitty Cheerleader Football cake came to mind... so I used that general design to come up with a plan for this cake!
For the bottom tier of the cake, I used my FMM Multi Ribbon Cutter to make different sized black and green stripes.
To give the cake a little bling, I added sprays of stars to the cake in a few places. You can see how I do stars on wires here. I did some of the stars white with silver disco dust and the rest of the stars black.
The basketballs were made in baskeball lollipop candy molds with orange candy melts. I used a black food marker to draw on the the lines. I had a couple of extras so I wrapped them up and sent them along for the girls...
You could also do these for party favors! Who wouldn't love a chocolate basketball lollipop?
This cake was big... with 60+ servings. The top 6" tier is Strawberry Cake with Strawberry Buttercream, the middle is 8" round Double Chocolate Brownie with Ganache filling and Chocolate Buttercream and the bottom is 10" round White Almond Sour Cream with Vanilla-Almond Buttercream.
Did I miss any details? Do you have any questions about this cake? Please leave them in the comments!
