It’s late, late tonight… the day after Christmas and I couldn’t decide what to post about but the hubby is watching a football game that I have no interest in, so therefore… I want to blog (note: I do enjoy football and usually enjoy watching the games with him but tonight I’m just not feeling it). Anyway, I have some Christmas cupcakes that I never shared, but I’m a day late and a dollar short on that note. I have nothing that just screams “Happy New Year” so that’s out too. Therefore, you get Turtle Cupcakes.
Why turtles? I don’t know.
I guess the short answer is I’m behind. I still haven’ shared about 75% of my cakes from 2014 and now we’re days away from wrapping up 2015 and gaaaah… I feel like such a failure. SO – I skipped to the end of my 2014 pics to see what I was working on this time last year.
One of the things I did in December 2014 were these Turtle Cupcakes. I remember that my Mama called me last minute and told me she really wanted me to a cake for a friend of hers (a fellow teacher). Because it was my Mama… I couldn’t really say “no” even though I was super-duper busy.
I did tell her I couldn’t do a cake… but instead I offered up cupcakes and they’d have to be pretty simple. She said her friend loved turtles (she actually wanted a turtle cake…. not happening) so I told her I’d do the best I could and pull together some Turtle Cupcakes.
This is what she got:
A 6-pack of white almond sour cream cupcakes with vanilla buttercream. Three tiny little fondant turtles and 3 cupcakes with matching sprinkles. I know… pitiful, but really, it was the best I could do and stay sane!
I used round cutters for the body and for the round white disc that the turtle sat on, hand-rolled the legs and head, then used a flat tool (from a set like this) to make the back impressions and food markers and a Jem tool for the face. I used sugar glue to attach the turtles tot he disc below it and everything was done with homemade marshmallow fondant.
Oh… I have to share this one more thing. At that time, I was feeling so guilty about how busy I was with orders and how little time I was spending with my kiddos. My little boy (3 at the time) came into the kitchen and asked to make turtles with me.
I don’t remember the exact sequence of events, but I finally said he could “help” and I gave him some fondant (in all the needed colors) and let him share my tools… he made this fondant turtle cupcake topper:
He was so proud of his work – insisting that I photograph his just like I did mine – and I was really glad I let him (and helped him) make one! Also… I’m really happy to say that this year I did better – I’m being a “Yes” Mommy! I had/have no orders from Dec. 24- Jan 9. I am enjoying time with my family… really relaxing and saying YES as much as I possibly can!
Speaking of relaxing… I’m off to bed so I can be bright and awake for church in the morning!
