Update October 2013. I've now had these for 18 months and I'm still loving them!! They've never fallen down and they still work beautifully to hold and organize all of my spice containers!
Today I want to share with you how I organize and store my spices... and what I consider the best way to organize spices! Let me start by saying that we live in a pretty old house that is
embarrassingly really outdated.
When we first moved in, I had to get creative with ways to get all of my stuff into a limited number of cabinets.
I decided that the best place to store all of my spices was above the oven, in two small cabinets up there (they're about 13" tall with a huge vent pipe in the middle). It was a good idea except...
... when you put 40+ spices in a space like that, it's very hard to find what you're looking for. I'd often end up either having to go find a stool to get up there where I could see and dig around for the spice I needed, or end up with spices falling on my head several times a week.
Usually I had spices on my head
because I was too lazy to find a stool! I wish I had a before picture... you'd immediately see what I mean!
Anyway, that was until I discovered these marvelous Spice Rack Storage/Organizers.
I saw them on Amazon and immediately had a "lightbulb" moment! I ordered three sets!! They're not expensive at all ($12.99 per set as I write this) and worth. every. penny.
I've had spice turntable-thingys (very technical, aren't I?). I've had hanging spice racks. I've had racks sitting on my counter next to my stove.
I never loved any of them like I love these! They take up no space on my counter and the spices don't fall off when I spin a rack around. I'm just sayin'... these things are genious!
When they came in the mail, I was more excited than Christmas!! I immediately emptied the cabinet, wiped it all down and installed my nifty new organizers.
Then proceeded to show them to every person that stopped by my kitchen for the next few weeks!! Now I can see all of my small and medium spice bottles easily!
The names are
mostly all turned toward me and I don't have to dig around trying to find the correct tiny bottle of thyme or white pepper.
PS - Not a single one has fallen off since I bought them and put them up in January. I read some reviews of people who had used them for years... and when they finally came off, they bought Command Strips and put them right back up!
I have to tell you... the reason mine look wonky is well, I'm just a dork and didn't get them on evenly on this first door (above).
PLUS, they come in strips of 4, but you can easily cut them into singles or doubles or triples to make them fit your space. I could easily fit 6 in a row (if I had done it right... see below where I did better on the second door).
For this second door, I used a strip of 4, then cut strips of 2 and lined them up to maximize my space! See?
I still have a few of those huge spice bottles in the cabinet, along with my bowls of homemade taco seasoning and homemade Italian dressing mix. Plus I keep my tea, some of my extracts, and other odds and ends up there. But they are easy to sort through - without things ending up on my head!
While most of my kitchen still is not nearly as organized as I'd like... at least now my spices are easy to find!! These spice rack storage/organizers work for me!!
