Tonight I thought I’d share what I did this week…. and it was A LOT!! Keep reading for all the pictures and details!
Several weeks ago – maybe a couple of months now – I announced that I would be cutting back on orders – cutting way back. I’ve been overwhelmed, in physical pain, and well… tired. A lot. And for the most part, I’ve done really well about sticking to that decision and not having over-booked weekends.
When I made the announcement, I actually still had a few overbooked weekends on my schedule but I worked through those and finally felt like I could breathe. Then this weekend happened.
I’m not sure how my schedule got so out of control for this last week/weekend in August, but somewhere along the way, I flaked out and took more orders than I planned to do.
Not more than I’ve ever done… and I knew that I could do… I used to have weeks like this all the time, but these days – I really aim to do a lot less!! Anyway – on top of having a super busy week, my husband and I celebrated our 19th wedding anniversary on Monday.
He had a business trip Sunday-Wednesday and he asked me to go along with him … which was SO fantastic! Except I couldn’t really start early on my long list of orders…. oops!
SO – I had 3 cakes, 36 candy apples, 7 dozen cookies (8 different designs) and 2 dozen petit fours. And only 2 full days (plus a couple of nights) to do them. I was afraid. Very afraid. But I tackled my orders one at a time and only stayed up til 3am once and got them done! Here they are…
First up… a simple cake for John Dale celebrating his 2nd birthday. He was having a Chuggington Party, but his Mom just wanted a simple cake:
I took the pic in a hurry… the lighting was not great 🙁 This one was delivered Thursday afternoon. This was white cake with vanilla buttercream. You can see John Dale’s 1st birthday cake here… Mickey Mouse (the very first one)!
Next – I had to deliver some cookies for a Luau Party on Friday morning:
Lindsey’s only request for these is that they be BRIGHT – so bright they were! You can find my sugar cookie recipe here and royal icing recipe here. Later on Friday, I met up with a customer to give her the sweets for a Southern-themed bridal shower:
The colors and design for the cookies and petit fours came from the invitations:
You can find those on Etsy here. So – I made tiny magnolias from gum paste and attached them to the cookies with royal icing. The background of the cookies were done with petal dust and vodka for a watercolor effect:
I also made Petit Fours with a simple monogram on them… you can see how to make these delicious petit fours here.
Next up was Saturday morning deliveries. And the workload didn’t seem to be getting any lighter – so Friday night was the night I was up til after 3am. Oy!
First I delivered cookies and candy apples for a baby shower:
Find out how I make candy apples any color here.
My next order going out was this Maleficent Cake: (P.S…. red or black?)
Of everything I did this weekend – painting that character was the scariest/hardest thing. I used Shawna McGreevy’s free tutorial here and while I was happy with the finished cake – I know it didn’t begin to measure up to the original!
An last but certainly not least… this Shabby Chic Baby Shower Cake.
I took the wrong camera lens so I couldn’t get pics of everything, but the decor for this baby shower was some of the most gorgeous I’ve ever seen. It was completely perfect! Several peeps on Facebook (maybe my most liked cake EVER!) asked about the topper – the teacup, jewelry and roses on top were real 🙂
And that was that! Every single thing was made start-to-finish in around 60 hours… of course with the help of my amazing husband and children! And then it was time to rest!
I hope you’re all having a fantastic weekend!
