Hey Peeps… long time, no cake, huh?! I’ve been busy sharing places to shop for party supplies, Caramel Apple Push Pops and even sock deals… but no cake. Well, tonight that changes… I’m gonna tell you about this Woodland Animals Tree Stump Baby Shower Cake!
I’ll start by pointing out that this cake is not covered in fondant. Ya’ll know I struggle with buttercream, so it was a pretty big deal for me to do a tiered cake that was not covered in fondant. I think one reason I was brave enough to do this one is that I was able to stack up the 2nd tier and then pipe on the tree stump texture.
Where I always truly have fits is when I have to stack a smooth finished buttercream tier on top… can you say nightmare? Anyway – not so for this one! I put the top tier on, doweled it into place and then piped on the “bark”.
I can’t find the pic or invite now, but I’m pretty sure I based the animals on the design of the baby shower invitation. Since they were all flat (except the fox), I really had fun doing all the layers and details. To give the cake a little dimension, I did make 3-D mushrooms and I piped on grass for the borders!
And of course, there was the fox:
He wasn’t too hard to make – the key was making him a couple of days ahead so he would be dry and hard! I made him with orange homemade marshmallow fondant and then added tylose so he would stiffen up! If you want to learn to make cute little animals like this, I highly recommend Sharon Wee’s Craftsy Class: Cake Topper Techniques: Fondant Animals.
That class really gave me a solid base of knowledge for doing animals and I felt like after I took it, I could apply the knowledge to all sorts of different designs! PS. It’s on sale for only $19.99 as I write this… that’s 50% off the regular price! Woot-Woot!
Oh and for Drew’s name, I used these Alphabet Cutters from Brown Cookie… love those!
I can tell you just from looking at this cake that I did 6″ and 8″ round tiers, but after digging though my records, I apparently didn’t write down the cake flavor. But the buttercream is vanilla and chocolate… so you can click those links for the recipes. If you need other cake recipes, my most popular are vanilla cake, chocolate cake and white almond sour cream (aka wedding cake).
