Rainbow Barbie Cake for Sarah’s Birthday!

Rainbow Barbie Cake
A Rainbow Barbie Cake

My daughter Sarah turned 8 years old this past week! For her birthday, she wanted a “girls day out” and sleepover with her friends Kaylee and Isabella. Isabella didn’t get to come but we made a day of it Saturday with Kaylee and her mom Amy.

We got ice cream…

And went shopping…

And went out to eat lunch… (actually we did that first but somehow I’m mixing up the pics).

Anyway… it was super fun day with the girls…. and Asher. Then on Sunday after church, we had a huge family birthday party for Sarah and Noah (he has a birthday in April too!). All of our immediate family was here, along with lots of friends. Her friend Isabella, who missed the shopping and sleepover did get to come to the party…yay! This is her with Sarah (taken a few weeks ago because my camera SD card malfunctioned just as the party started and I had no backup available), but they are such good buddies I had to share!

Anywho… this year Sarah chose a Barbie cake. Well, actually, she chose a flower cake, a monkey cake, a something-else-I-don’t-remember cake, and eventually settled on Barbie.

I’m not a huge Barbie fan, I’d prefer that she played with “regular” baby dolls, but Barbies are pretty and girly and Sarah is all about girly!

This Barbie cake had rainbow-colored ruffles. It turned out really great and she loved it. It was pink and purple vanilla cake on the inside (sort of like a tie-dyed cake, but only 2 colors), but again, no pics because of my camera… Here’s one of the few pictures that Richy took with his phone. She doesn’t look all that happy, but she really was!!

Anyway, so happy birthday to my Sarah!! I love you sweetheart! Noah’s cake will be posted later tonight is posted here. My little Asher hasn’t felt well today, so it’s taken me hours to finish this post and he’s fussing again now, but later tonight, I’ll write a post for Noah’s birthday cake!

  1. Hi, I LOVE your Barbie cake… I don’t have any little girls of my own… but I recently became part of the Big Brother/Sister program and my husband and I were chosen for a little girl whose birthday is in late August… i would love any help you could give me to make this cake for her???

    1. I baked it in a Wonder Mold pan with an additional 8″ cake underneath to give it more height. The Barbie is real, I just wrapped her bottom half in plastic wrap and stuck her through the middle. I covered it in buttercream, then fondant, then did the rows of ruffles one at a time!

      1. It looks awesome… I have been wanting to start “cake decorating” for a LONG time and I think this will be my first project 🙂 I am VERY excited… did you use food coloring for the different colors? I will let you know how it comes out… I will be doing a TEST cake this weekend 🙂

  2. Please give more details on how u made the ruffles. This is the most gorgeous barbie cake I’ve seen and I would love to mimic it:). My cousin is turning three in two weeks so I would love to make this cake for her.

      1. Thanks a lot for the link. I had no idea that so many materials went into creating ruffles. Is there another tool I can use besides the ball tool to create the ruffle effect? And seeing that you did the ruffles on the Barbie cake upside down opposed to the ruffles in the link did you start from the bottom up when attaching the ruffles to the Barbie?
