Dust Candy Mold with Cornstarch

Start by dusting your mold with corn starch. I keep corn starch in a shaker and use it all the time for cake projects!

Knead Fondant until smooth

Pinch off a small piece of fondant and knead it until smooth.

Press fondant into candy mold

Press the fondant into the mold, then trim off the excess so it’s smooth with the mold:

Cut off extra fondant

Now pop the mold into the freezer for 3-5 minutes.

Freeze and pop crabs out

Then flip the mold over and tap it – the little crabs should pop right out. If not, you could use one of your modeling tools to “help” it out.

Rub with shortening to remove corn starch

Use a tiny bit of shortening on a paper towel and rub it all over the crabs to remove any visible corn starch residue.

Make eye holes with ball tool

Use a tiny ball tool (or even the handle end of a small paint brush) to make small holes for the eyes. *Make sure you do it on the “front” of the crab… we won’t talk about how many I made backwards before realizing it. OoO

Piping gel in the eye holes

Use a tiny paintbrush (mine is stained green) to add a tiny dot of piping gel to each eye hole. You could also use homemade sugar glue here if you like.

Sugar Pearl Eyes

Last step… press a black sugar pearl into each eye. And that’s it – you’re done! You can use them immediately or store them in an airtight container for use later (out of direct light).

Fondant Crabs

I made a whole bunch of them a few days before my order, put them on parchment paper on a cookie sheet with a lid, then stored them on a shelf out of direct light until ready to use!

These were vanilla cupcakes with vanilla buttercream and I mixed up the liners – using half black and half red & white striped to match the party theme!

  1. Dear Rose I write from Argentina, a child playing learned to cook today would make this skill
a small income into something I like to do.
Since you discovered on the Web I receive your mails daily
in my e- mail very interesting and practical tips
My difficulty is that you, Rose does not have a reference in Latin America for decoration materials and raw materials according by names in the US
How could I replace or buy in my country similar products?
In these times is not possible in my country provide us different products via online stores, there are limited imports .
Rose another small problem (ugh few !!!) I understand English but it would be easier to get the tutorials in Spanish Language.
I am amazed how your Rose you deal between being professional kitchen and wife and mother?
I congratulate you and I look forward an answer and help if possible .

    1. Thank you so much for your kindness Susana! Unfortunately, there’s no way for me to know about ingredients around the world – I can only talk about what I’m familiar with here in the US. I think with Google translate, you can change my blog into Spanish but that’s the only way I Know of that you could read my blog in Spanish.
