This Fox Unicorn Cake with Wings is a combination of sweet Miram's favorite things... a fox cake with gold sparkly unicorn horn and also - wings.
This amazing and unique was created for a very amazing little girl... my best friend Kathy's daughter Miriam. They live in Italy but were stateside late last year. And it just so happened that Miriam was celebrating her birthday while they were visiting.
When they're here in the states, they often stay with family a few hours away. So Kathy wasn't sure we could come, but "just in case", Kathy invited us to her Mom's house to celebrate Miriams birthday.
Of course I said YES and because we take advantage of every opportunity we can to see each other and... I never get to do cakes for her or her kids, so I asked if I could make Miriam's cake.
Kathy was happy for me to do it, so I asked what the theme was. I wouldn't have in a million years ever have dreamed of what she'd ask for. Actually - she sent me a picture:
Fox Unicorn Cake with Wings
It was a Fox Unicorn Cake... with wings! I thought it was the cutest idea ever and could not WAIT to get started!! 🦊🦄 🎂
First things first - I had to decide about the wings. And I think it was in our messages that Kathy told me that Miriam wanted a "normal fox, gold horn, and silver wings".
After a little thinking on it, I decided to do the wings with glittery scrapbook paper. And a couple of days before the party - I had them made:
To make the wings, well, I can't give you specific instructions on these. Using a pencil, I drew a the feather pattern on the back of the first color I made. Then I cut it out, laid it on the next color, traced out a pattern a little bigger and cut it out, repeat.
After I had one side complete (4 layers), I then flipped them over and duplicated them for the other side (except a mirror reflection).
I used stick glue to put them together then let them dry overnight. Jumbo craft sticks were attached to the back with hot glue, then I pushed those into the sides of the cake before party time.
The wings were actually pretty stiff on their own (because the glitter paper is pretty thick/sturdy), but I needed the craft stick so I'd have a way to attach it to the cake without pushing the glitter paper into the cake.

The Gold Gum Paste Unicorn Horn
She also asked for a gold/glittery horn so I made my usual horn with gum paste, sprayed it with edible gold spray, then while it was still wet, I sprinkled it with non-toxic gold glitter. Yes, I know this is not a "food product" and is not FDA approved.
But it was not for a client and we had no intentions of eating the hard, gum paste horn, so I had no reservations about using it on this cake for a friend.
The Fox Cake
To zero in on the Fox part of the cake, I used this cake I found on Pinterest for inspiration.
To get the different shades of orange for the buttercream, I used Americolor Orange, Terracotta, and Electric Orange. I piped it all on with an Ateco #825 tip (very similar to a Wilton 1M, but a little larger).
The eyes and nose were made with Satin Ice Black Fondant. The ears were done with homemade marshmallow fondant that I also colored orange with one or more of the orange colors mentioned above.
The board was covered with matching gold glitter paper, then I wrapped it with a black ribbon. I have a tutorial for how I do my boards here.
The Fox Unicorn Cake with Wings details:
- The cakes were 7" round (3 layers) of white almond sour cream cake baked in my favorite Magic Line pans.
- It was filled with strawberry filling (made like this raspberry filling) and vanilla buttercream.
- It was covered and decorated also with homemade vanilla buttercream.
I chilled this cake really well overnight, then we drove it almost 3 hours to the party and it arrived in perfect condition! Also... Miriam LOVED it!!
We had a blast at her party! And I cannot express in words how much it meant to me to be able to make a cake for one of Kathy's girls!
