Western Groom’s Cake
This Western Groom’s Cake had all the good stuf – a “leather” belt and belt buckle, wood texture and a textured leather wrap on the bottom tier. This would be an amazing groom’s cake or birthday cake for a man who loves western-themed decor. This exact cake was for a birthday! Keep reading!

Oh gosh I loved doing this cake!! Mr. Jack – an elderly man in our church – stepped down from being a deacon after 20 years of service (because of health concerns). Our pastor’s wife asked me if I’d do a cake to honor him and there was no way I would turn down a chance to so something so special.

Mr. Jack is one of the sweetest human beings I’ve ever known – he always has a smile on his face and his love of the Lord radiates from his entire being. He’s just precious.
Anyway… he loves to be outside and he loves all things rustic and country and western. I really wanted to capture his personality so I decided to use wood, leather and a belt buckle (he’s almost never seen without one of his fancy silver belt buckles) as textures for the cake.

This cake was 5″, 7″ and 9″ tiers.. the top two were lemon and the bottom was red velvet. The frosting was all cream cheese buttercream – colored with warm brown gel coloring. I hope to share a tutorial for some of the textures later, but I will quickly share some of the tools I used to make this cake:
- sewing ruler (to measure the leather wrap and the belt – plus as a straight edge for the long strips)
- wood grain impression mat
- ribbon cutter (for the wood panels)
- black petal dust and red velvet petal dust (for the shading on the wood)
- confectioners glaze for the shine on the leather
- Nu silver and Imperial Gold (mixed with a few drops of lemon extract) for the metallics on the buckle
- smallest pearl mold (for the border on the buckle)
- plaque cutter for the buckle shape
- floral design impression mat for the leather and belt buckle texture
- stitching tool for the edges of the leather and belt
