Wild One Drum with Teepee Cake Topper

This Wild One Drum Cake with Teepee Cake Topper is perfect for your little “Wild One”. I loved doing the teepee cake topper, the feathers and arrows and the drum look for the top tier. It was all perfect for the Wild One Party theme!

Wild One Drum Cake with Teepee Cake Topper

Around three or four years ago, I lost control of my photo organization and totally gave up on sharing every cake I’ve ever done. I’d have to blog every day for who knows how long to share them all.

Instead, I decided to share my favorites or the ones with the best or most popular themes. Also, the unique ones… because those are the really fun ones! With that in mind… here’s a favorite from a couple of years ago…

Wild One Drum Cake with Teepee Cake Topper

This Wild One Drum Cake with Teepee Cake Topper is one of the more unique cakes I’ve done and I was so excited about how it came out. Let’s start at the top… the Teepee Cake Topper:

Making a teepee cake topper is easier than you think. After I had the cake finished and stacked, I used 6 (maybe 7?) of these bamboo skewers to make the structure of the teepee.

I cut them down just a little, then pushed them in in circle at an angle so that the pointed ends all met in the center. Then I used baker’s twine to tie it together and wrapped it in brown fondant. If your baker’s twine is brown, you may not need or want to wrap it.

Next you’ll want to roll out a small piece of fondant to wrap around the skewers for the teepee cake topper. I wrapped it then used a cake tool to mark where I’d want to cut it. I took it back off, laid it flat and trimmed the fondant

to the proper shape. Then I wrapped it back around and trimmed again until I got the desired shape.

For a little added character, I turned up the corners on the front of the teepee. Then I used these mini cutters, this ribbon cutter and my extuder to add the shapes and stripes.

Drum Cake Tier

For the top tier that would hold the teepee cake topper, it was designed to look like a drum with leather stretched tight across the top. I wrapped the tier in brown fondant, then I rolled out a thin piece of fondant to lay across the top. I cut out the holes and stretched the a bit to give the look.

To get the used, leather look, I dusted the white fondant with cocoa powder. The strings and the band around the bottom were cut with the ribbon cutter and again I used a round mini cutter to do the small dots around the bottom.

Feathers & Arrows Cake Tier

For the bottom tier, I covered it in white homemade marshmallow fondant and also dusted it with cocoa powder. The arrows were hand cut from different colors of fondant and I used my ribbon cutter for the “sticks”.

The fondant feathers were done with a technique I learned in a Bohemian Cake class. They were super easy to do and very pretty on the cake! The short version is… I used a cookie cutter similar to this to cut out the shapes. Then I added the stripes of color on top with more fondant (secured with sugar glue). Lastly, I used a gum paste tool to add the lines/texture to the feathers. Easy-peasy!
