Cars 2 Lightning McQueen Cake

I’ve done Cars cakes before (here and here) and they’ve always been fun, but this one was a different design – and I always enjoy changing things up!

For this cake, I started with 6″ and 9″ round cakes. Then I carved away a good chunk of cake at a diagonal for the road. It wasn’t as hard as I thought and it turned out pretty neat!

I used marshmallow fondant for almost all of the decorations – except (as usual) Satin Ice red for the letters/number, dark/chocolate brown for the mountains, and black for the road and flag.

I used these Ateco letters for the words on this cake. This is a great set that is very versatile!

To make the flag on the back of the number, I used a tiny square cutter from this small set of cutters and I used the three from the older Wilton 101 cookie cutters set.

My oldest son informed me that for the cake to be “realistic”, the road needed to not just end on the cake… but continue into a tunnel. Since it was a fun detail – I added the tunnel and loved the way it turned out!

The car on the cake was this Cars 2 Shake ‘n Go Lightning McQueen! It was the perfect size for the 6″ cake topper.

Did I miss any details? Do you have any questions about this cake? Please leave them in the comments!
