Hey ya'll!! How was your weekend?? Mine was busy, busy!! I just finished up another post about our almost 6000-mile road trip, so I wanted to pop over here and share a post too! Most importantly, my son Caleb celebrated his 14th birthday this weekend, so I had to talk about it!!
How is even possible that he's 14? I really wish time would slow down. Now this sweet freckle-faced boy, Caleb, he is my "easy" child... he's mild-mannered, sensitive, very kind and helpful, generous and always easy to please.
He never has elaborate requests for his cakes... and this year was no different. He wanted THIS:
He initially just asked for a cake like last year... another Oreo cake, except it had Legos :
I wrote very briefly about it here (and you can see how it had more than an inch of filling in the pic here!!). Anyway, he wanted the same thing. Then he saw one of those Reese's Pieces cakes with the bag and the candy spilling out (the gravity-defying ones) and he asked if I could do that with Oreos.
Consider me challenged!! I've always wanted to do a gravity-defying cakes, so it was FUN for me! And easy!!
I made that Saturday night and we went out for pizza after lunch Sunday with our extended family for Caleb's birthday lunch. I have tons of pics but I won't bore you... here's just one of Caleb with his half-eaten cake (and my nephews, my aunt, my pastor, my Daddy, and my brother in the background):
His cake was chocolate cake with Oreo Cookies & Cream filling, covered in vanilla buttercream and lots and lots and LOTS of Mini Oreos!
Now that I've told you about that... let me back up. I was supposed to have a quiet week... only one order plus my son's cake. But then I blinked and somehow the week got really busy. It still wasn't a bad week - just not what I was expecting.
Earlier in the week I baked for some peeps in my church - one had had surgery - another in the nursing home. I am not complaining about that... baking for the pure joy of sharing with others is such a huge blessing! I also had an order for one of these Killer Chocolate Cakes. Ya'll.. it was all I could do to not eat the ganache before it made it onto the cake!
Then I made this small Buttercream Roses Cake for a lady celebrating her 60th birthday. It was white almond sour cream cake with vanilla buttercream - ivory colored!
I also made this "3" Racetrack Cake for Harvey & Jamie - twins celebrating their 3rd birthday!! You can see their 2nd birthday cake here - it was a Paw Patrol themed party!! (same post as above!).
In addition to those, my husband requested coffee cupcakes for work, and then... some Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Cupcakes for my sister-in-law. My brother ordered them for her for their anniversary since he's working off-shore right now! She almost cried she was so happy to get those cupcakes!! Gotta love that!!
Anyway... so that's how I spent my weekend. That and tiling our bathroom floor... but that's another story for another day. Have a great week ya'll!

Your gravity-defying oreo cake for Caleb's birthday is amazing. I know it had to taste wonderful, too. I always look forward to, and am in awe of the wonderful cakes you produce. Keep up the great work, and thank you so very much for your blog!

I agree with the previous commenter--so glad I found your blog! Your tutorials are awesome, and it's been SO helpful for me as I begin to dabble in cake decorating as a career. That Oreo cake looks delicious.

Rose my only son is also named Caleb and he saw me admiring this cake and now insists that he needs it for his half birthday this Wednesday...he turns 6.5...My caleb is also a sweetheart, just like ur son. He wants to call the neighbourhood kids over to celebrate. So now after watching a YouTube video, im told I need to look for a balloon stick..I have no clue where to find it. Is that what you used? Would a boba straw work? also did you use melted chocolate or frosting to adhere the cookies on the support?
Susan
Hi Liz, thanks for stopping by the blog. You could use a dowel or boba straw. Melted white chocolate or candy melts are used to secure them the support. Hope that helps!
Mary
Could you please tell me how you arranged the oreos? I've looked all over this blog as well as your other pages, but no where does it show how to make the cake or the oreo "fountain"
Susan
Hi Mary! Thanks for stopping by the blog. To make it look like the Oreos (or candy if doing a bag of candy cascading) is to place a dowel in the center of the cake, and then attach the Oreos to it with melted candy melts. Put a dab of melted chocolate on the top of the dowel and place the container/bag to secure it in place. Just arrange the rest of the Oreos how you like so it looks like they poured out and down the cake. Hope that helps!

What size cake pans did you use?
Rose Atwater
I'm pretty sure those were 7-inch cakes.
