If you need a patriotic dessert - this one is perfect for Memorial Day, July 4th, or any other summer party when berries are in season. And it's an easy dessert because you can use store-bought angel food cake, pre-made strawberry pie filling, and a few other simple ingredients to make the perfect summer dessert.
What is a Trifle?
Classic trifle recipes are layers of cake and fruit, usually with a filling of some sort. Because the cake is already baked, there's no need to heat up an oven for trifles. You only need to assemble the layers of cake and layers of fruit in a trifle dish so you can enjoy their delicious flavors and how pretty they are to look at.

Substitutions
As it's written, this easy trifle recipe uses mostly pre-made ingredients to come together quickly and with no fuss. But this recipe is so versatile, you can really go all out and change it up in so many ways.
Another note: it's a no-bake recipe as written. However, if you want to go more from scratch for the cake or customize it to your liking, here are some substitution ideas for you:
- Angel Food Cake - I love using pre-made angel food cakes, but you could also use your own angel food cake recipe or a frozen pound cake or homemade pound cake recipe. You could also go with a simple white cake from a box mix (although this cake will get soggier much faster).
- Cool Whip - instead of using a non-dairy whip cream substitute like Cool Whip, you could make fresh homemade whipped cream from heavy cream. I have a full recipe here but you just whip some heavy whipping cream with a little sugar until you get stiff peaks and you have delicious homemade whipped cream. This is my preference 99% of the time, but in a pinch or a hurry, Cool Whip saves the day!
- Vanilla Pudding - for the pudding layer, you could also use white chocolate pudding mix or a cheesecake pudding mix. Whichever you choose, be sure it is an instant pudding mix, not one you have to cook.
- Fruit - Add more fresh fruit if you like - including fresh strawberries, raspberries, or blackberries. I love having extra fresh berries to garnish the cake on top as well.
- No Trifle Bowl? If you don't have a large trifle dish, you could also make this red, white and blue berry trifle in a punch bowl, a different type of glass bowl or make individual trifles in mason jars.

Pro Tips
- If you're serving this summer berry trifle for Independence Day, arrange some berries on top into "stars and stripes" for a trifle version of a flag cake. Nothing says "Happy 4th of July" more than that!
- If you're hosting 4th of July celebrations (or any other party) and you want to prep some things ahead, this no bake dessert is perfect for that! Make it the night before and let it chill overnight - it'll be a perfect
Storage Directions
- This patriotic berry trifle will keep in the fridge (covered tightly with plastic wrap) for 2-3 days but the longer it's kept, the soggier the cake gets.
