It's no secret that I love rainbows and bright colors so I was SUPER excited about making these My Little Pony Rainbow Dash Cupcakes last year. I wish I had done a tutorial for some of them, but I didn't, so I'll just share what I can.
PS - I made these and a second order of these last January/February so I may have forgotten some of the details or get some things wrong!
These were for a sweet girl named Audrey and she was celebrating her 4th birthday and love for Rainbow Dash. They only needed a dozen cupcakes so I wanted to squeeze in a good variety and have fun making them!
For most of the cupcakes, I did the rainbow hearts! I used some homemade marshmallow fondant and some Wilton pre-colored fondant (here and here) to get the 6 colors, then I rolled each one out really thin and cut ribbons with my FMM ribbon cutter.
I lined them up in a long row, then used a heart cookie cutter to cut out the shapes. I let them dry for around half an hour, then moved them (piece by piece) over to the white rounds and attached them with sugar glue.
I cut out the white circles with the 2" Ateco fluted round cookie cutter from this set.
I used a very similar technique for the cupcake topper with the "4" on it, except I cut out a circle (vs. heart) and I attached a "4" that I cut out with my Funky Alphabet Cutters.
For this cupcake, I used my extruder to make the tiny strands of each color, then I used tiny balls of white fondant and a ball tool to make the clouds.
I also made this tiny butterfly for one cupcake and it was done with a mini butterfly cutter and then I rolled the tiny balls of fondant and the "body" with my fingers to put all the details together.
For Rainbow Dash's symbol (is that called a symbol?), it was also done mostly by hand and gluing it together with sugar glue.
And last, but not least... Rainbow Dash herself. I really wanted to get her perfect but tiny details like this are not something I've had tons of practice with. SO - I just did my best - hand-cutting most everything and piecing it together based on a picture I saved.
I used food markers on her eyes and this JEM tool for her mouth. OH - and a tiny teardrop cutter (I love this set from Autumn Carpenter and use them all the time!!) for the ear plus a gumpaste tool for the impression there. I rolled the mane and wings with my fingers.
The cupcakes were vanilla cake - done rainbow style with bright pink vanilla buttercream. You can see how I make the rainbow cupcakes here.
After I let the toppers dry overnight, I pushed them on top of the fresh buttercream 🙂
