An Airplane Cake, A Smash Cake & Airplane Cookies!

A couple of weeks ago I got to do a brand new cake design based on airplanes! This airplane cake and cookies and smash cake was for Wesson’s first birthday and it was so much fun!

First up, the big cake. It was all vanilla cake with vanilla buttercream, covered with marshmallow fondant. The clouds were vanilla buttercream too, and I used a large Wilton round tip to pipe them right onto the fondant! I used cookie cutters for the airplanes… the large one from this Wilton set and also this little cutesy one.

Next up, a smash cake! This is a trend in caking right now and I just love making the small little matching cakes!

This little airplane smash cake was a 6″ vanilla cake filled and frosted with matching blue vanilla buttercream! The mother of the birthday boy provided me with the matching Airplane “1” candle… but you can get one here (looks like that might be more than one… try here too!).

Lastly, Wesson’s Mom wanted matching airplane cookies and she wanted some chocolate at the party (what girl doesn’t?)! So, this is why I made those Brownie Roll-Out cookies a few weeks ago… and I made them again for this party! They turned out really great! (these were also cut out with the large cookie cutter from the Wilton set).

  1. Good morning Rose,
Thank you for sharing all your wonderful cake designs. I have been following you for the past year from Texas and have enjoyed the receipes. I do have a question for you as far as pricing on cakes. How much do you charge for a 2 tiered cake, such as the “Airplane cake”? It looks like a 6″ and 9″ layers, correct me if I am wrong.
I am making a 2 tiered cake covered in Fondant and making the Fondant from your recipe…hope it comes out as good looking as yours. Any suggestions, first time making Fondant. Thanks you in advance.
    Many blessings,
    Connie Salazar

    1. Hi Connie! If my memory serves me, this cake had 6″ and 10″ tiers and would be $120. As for the fondant, I’d just make it way ahead so you can practice. It might be crumbly or dry after you get all the powdered sugar put in… JUST KEEP KNEADING! And if you have to, add a teaspoon of water at a time until it comes together. It’s not easy at first, but with practice, you’ll get it and it’ll be very worth the effort!

      1. Hello please can youbtell me.the servings of this double tier cake?
Also would like to know about clouds. How did you made them?
        Thanks
        Waiting for your reply

  2. Rose,
The dinosaur and airplane cakes are both adorable-the complimenting cookies are a great touch.
I love the whimsical number one on the large airplane cake-have you done a tutorial in the past explaining how you make the numbers?
    Thx

  3. I was also wondering what icing did you use on the cookies? I have a recipe for hard icing but my older kids don’t like it compared to cake icing. Any tips?

      1. thank you! If it all turns out ok I will send you a picture somehow! I love to bake but seldom get the chance too. If I bake at home everything’s always great looking. When I do it for one of my kids parties it’s always a mess! No clue what goes wrong! haha
