A couple of years ago I got this last minute request for an Archery Cake for the end of season banquet. While I generally have a "No Thank You" rule for last minute orders, my nephews were participating in the Archery Banquet, so I opted to say YES!
Before I tell you about that... let me say this. Being sick SUCKS. My kids have been sick for days and days and finally today they started feeling better. And then guess what? Now I'm feeling awful.
I have a sinus headache that is killing me and preventing me from sleeping... so since I'm up, I thought I'd write. However, I took some nighttime meds, so I'm gonna keep this short & sweet and hope the meds kick in quick!

Sooo... because the cake was requested last minute (if I remember right, it was the day before or early morning the day of), I didn't have time to plan or make anything ahead of time, so I was truly winging it with this design!
Also... I was winging it with the flavors too. I was already baking for my regular orders that week, so I used up extra batter from other orders to make the bottom tier chocolate cake and the top tier vanilla cake. And as you can see
- a rustic chocolate buttercream finish on the exterior - since I had extra chocolate buttercream 🙂
I used homemade marshmallow fondant and Satin Ice Red & Black Fondant to make the target and the ends of the arrows. For the largest circles of the target, I traced bowls... as they got smaller, I used round cutters.
I used bamboo skewers for the arrows, then added tylose to the fondant to make the ends of the arrows. I needed it to dry as quickly as possible!
For the banner - I used navy homemade marshmallow fondant and Tappit Block cutters to do the wording. I also used the zig-zag cutter from this straight frill cutter set to do the edges on the banner.
And ya'll... I think that's it on this Archery Cake. My head is still hurting but I'm getting quite drowsy so I'm gonna go catch some zzzz's.
Do you have any questions? Leave me a comment!

For a last minute order, you did a great job. Everything seems so real.
I have been baking cakes for many years but only just started decorating recently. I hope to get to your level in the near future.

This cake looks great! I will be making a birthday cake today for my husband and willl be using candy clay for the archery target. I am a novice at cake decorating so I'm trying to keep it as simple as possible.
I was wanting to know what the dimensions are for the target?
Thank you
Patricia

I think it was a 6" circle?! It was more than a year ago that I made it so I'm not 100% sure.
