This Cupcakes & Hearts 1st Birthday Party was done for Shauna, a precious friend from high school that I hadn't seen in years. Her baby girl Adyn Elizabeth was celebrating her 1st birthday!
She wanted a sweet cupcake theme, but since Adyn's birthday is near Valentine's Day, she wondered about maybe having hearts as part of the party too! Shauna gave me her ideas and let me come up with a design... I love it when I get to be so free and creative!
Shauna asked for cookies, cupcakes and a smash cake. I had recently bought a cupcake cookie cutter (mine was from the Wilton Party Cookie Cutters set) that I had been dying to use, so of course, I had to include the cupcake cookies!
These ended up being my inspiration for the entire party! I also used these cookies for my timeline photo on Facebook for this week... because it's almost Valentine's Day!
The cookie design was inspired by some cookies I spotted over on Bunny Hill Homestead. I wanted to wrap the theme around white, hot pink and red, so I made my pink a little more PINK than the originals.
I also made big pink heart cookies and tiny red heart cookies to go with them! For those of you who might like to know, I used this roll-out sugar cookie recipe and this royal icing recipe.
For the cupcakes... I kept them simple, but they went with the theme perfectly! They were vanilla cake with vanilla buttercream. I piped on the frosting with Ateco tip #825 from this Ateco Large Tube set.
For half of the cupcakes, I used simple red fondant hearts (I use Satin Ice Red Vanilla fondant anytime I need red!). I used a small 1" heart cutter from this Ateco mini cutters set.
For the others, I simple sprinkled on some of the tiny pastel heart sprinkles. Oh, and I mixed up the liners - some white and some hot pink - and I doubled them because I just love that look!
And last is the smash cake! This was a single layer 6" round cake. It was covered and decorated with vanilla buttercream. I used hot pink homemade marshmallow fondant for the cupcake liner.
Isn't this just the sweetest 1st birthday party theme... ever? Even if your party is not around Valentine's, I think it would work for any little girl's 1st birthday!
The colors could be changed up to any theme you wish! I just love it!
Here they are all boxed up and ready to go:
If you're looking for ideas for a cupcake party, I've also done one other cupcake themed 1st birthday here with pastel colors and giant cupcake smash cake and... I've made a giant cupcake cake a couple of years ago! It was one of my very first orders!
One last picture... if you're on Pinterest - I'd love for you to follow me and pin this picture (just hover over the picture with your mouse and click the "Pin It" button!):
And that's it!
Do you have any questions about these cookies, cupcakes or smash cake? Please leave them in the comments and I’ll do my best to answer and help out!

Rose, Rose, Rose....after reading your last entry yesterday about Richie going away, my comment/question has nothing to do with this birthday cake, although, it is lovely as usual. My question is, How on God's green earth are you going to do school, meals, homework, AND still get orders completed while he is gone????
You are invincible!
Rose
I don't know about being invincible... I've already been reduced to tears twice today and it's only Monday! But I do know that with God, all things are possible, so I'm just going to keep putting one foot in front of the other and doing one cake at a time! The good news is, I knew this time away was coming, so I tried to take less orders than usual. I don't know if I took few enough yet - but we'll see!
Kim
LOL...reduced to tears and its only Monday. My LOL is not because of your tears but more of an I-get-it chuckle.
We are women; hear us ROAR!

Rose I want to make some heart cookies for my grandchildren for Valentines, but I want to put them on a stick. Do you think that I can put the roll out sugar cookies on a stick and use the Royal Icing. Can you put sprinkles on the icing before it dries? Or should I use the buttercream icing. I want to put bags over them and put them in a cup with ribbon. Let me know what you think would be best. I also want to make red velvet cake pops, do you have a good recipe for that? Thanks for your help. I love looking at your site. Your cupcakes are so cute. Did you take cake decorating classes? I did years ago and I have lost a lot of it, because I did not use it. But, I love baking. I just need to get back with it. But, you come up with some great ideas. Thanks for sharing them with us.
Rose
Hi Brenda!
I've never baked cookies on a stick but this is a pretty sturdy cookie so I'd guess that it would work just fine!
Yes, you can put sprinkles on the cookies before they dry! The royal icing just needs to dry overnight before you bag them! The buttercream would work too but it's more likely to get smeared in the bag.
For the red velvet cake pops, just bake a red velvet cake (my recipe is here), crumble it up and mix in a little bit of cream cheese or vanilla frosting. Roll into the balls, chill them and dip them in the chocolate/white chocolate of your choice!
No, I've never taken a single decorating class. I've learned everything on my own! I hope I've helped! Good luck 🙂
Brenda
Girl, God has given you a great talent then, if you have learned it all on your own. How long have you been decorating cakes? Do you just get on the internet and look up things and learn how to do it from there. Your cakes are so cute and fun. Thanks so much for your help.
Brenda
One more thing, you were talking about using the fondant rolling pin for the cookies. I saw a small rolling pin, but it did not have a 1/4 ring on it. Which rolling pin has that ring on it? Thanks
Rose
Thank you Brenda! I absolutely consider it a gift from God. I got my first decorating kit at the age of 13 and for years, I'd just copy things out of books and play around - only doing an occasional cake here and there. But 3 years ago my brother asked me to do his wedding cake so I started researching online and reading everything I could get my hands on about tiered cakes, stacking, great recipes, making fondant, etc. And then I just practiced practiced practiced!! Even today, if I get a request thatI don't know how to do, I say yes, then figure it out 😉
Both of the Wilton fondant rolling pins (small and large) have rings that you can get (I think they come with them?). If not, you can order them on Wilton.com. But I have the 20" rolling pin that I'm sure comes with the 1/4" ring.
