Best Chili for Frito Pie
Making Frito Pie with canned chili is one thing that makes this one of my favorite easy recipes. Hormel Chili with Beans is our favorite chili but making frito pie with Wolf brand chili is also a really popular choice.
Choosing the best canned chili for Frito Pie is ultimately based on your family's taste. You could go with a vegetarian chili, chili with no beans, or a hot chili. The best Frito pie will be the one with your favorite canned chili!

Substitutions
Chili Cheese Frito Pie is versatile and there are lots of ways to change it up!
Fritos Chips. Original Fritos are our preference for this recipe but you could also use Fritos Scoops or Chili Cheese Fritos. Tortilla chips would also work and you'd have something more like Chili Nachos! You could also use generic corn chips!
Homemade Chili. Use your favorite chili recipe instead of canned chili if you wish! For this Chili Frito Pie, it's best to use a thick chili recipe.
Leftover Chili. In the same line of thinking, if you have leftover chili, you can absolutely use it in place of canned chili for this recipe.

Variations
Instead of a baked Frito Pie, here are some other ways to serve this simple recipe.
Walking Frito Pies - like walking tacos, you can buy individual bags of Fritos, open them and add a scoop of piping ht chili then cheese on top of the chili and enjoy!
Self-Serve Frito Pies - instead of the Frito Bake, make a big pot of chili (or heat up canned chili in a slow cooker), set out bowls of cheese and other toppings, then let each guest make their own Chili Frito Pie.
Vegetarian Frito Pie Recipe - Use meatless chili for a vegetarian version!
Stove-top Chili with Fritos - If time is not on your side, heat the chili over medium heat on the stovetop and put it on top of the Fritos and immediately add the shredded cheese so the cheese melts.
Make Ahead - Heat the chili ahead of time in a slow cooker or Instant Pot.

FAQ
We don't really like leftovers for this recipe because the Fritos will get a soggy as they sit in the fridge. But if you want to save them, you can keep the prepared chili pie in the fridge for up to 3 days. If you're concerned about leftovers, the better alternative would be to make one of the variations above so the chili would be separate for leftovers.
