Back when I made the cake with the watermelon cake topper, I also made matching watermelon cupcakes! Today I want to share with you how to make these easy, but super cute cupcake toppers.
They're perfect for a summer party or holiday get-together!
Here's what I used to make these:
Rolling pin and mat
3 round cookie cutters, close in size (mine were 2.25", 2.5" and 2.75" round)
Red, green and white fondant (you could also use pink instead of red)
Sugar Glue
Knife
Black food marker
Baked & frosted cupcakes
Step 1:
Take a ball of green fondant and roll it out. You're going to be doing 3 layers of fondant so you don't want the first one to be very thick.
Note:
You'll need 3 round cookie cutters, very close in size. As mentioned in the list above, I used size 2.25 inches, 2.5 inches and 2.75 inches. I realize that the diameter of these is larger than the top of a cupcake, but you'll be cutting it into quarters before using, so it's okay that they're bigger. You can see mine here:
Step 2:
Using the largest round cutter, cut out your green circles.
Step 3:
Using the medium round cutter, cut out white circles then center them and use a tiny amount of sugar glue to attach them onto the green circles.
Step 4:
Repeat the above steps using the red circles.
Step 5:
Now you have complete slices of watermelons. Use the black food marker to dot the slices - making "seeds".
Step 6:
To finish the toppers, cut them into fourths. If your fondant is stiff/dry enough, they can be used immediately. If not, you might want to let them dry overnight before attaching to a cupcake.
Step 7:
I baked vanilla cupcakes (with red food coloring) and topped them with lime green vanilla buttercream. Then I placed the slices of watermelon on top!
