Why You’ll Love Ravioli Lasagna

Traditional lasagna, while delicious, takes a lot of time and love to put together. On the other hand, this easy ravioli lasagna recipe (almost like a can be in the oven in less than 15 minutes without sacrificing flavor.

Reasons you’ll love lazy lasagna:

  • It’s easy with only 4 ingredients and a few minutes of your time to assemble.
  • It’s fast! There’s no need to boil traditional lasagna noodles like you do for classic lasagna. For this recipe, you add the frozen ravioli directly into the layers with no thawing or boiling the pasta first! That may be where it gets the name Lazy Lasagna with Ravioli.
  • You can feed the whole family with this one pan. It’s almost like a casserole in that sense – a Lazy Lasagna Casserole.
  • It’s delicious and very versatile! It works for weeknight dinners, entertaining guests, or a lazy weekend meal.

Ingredients

The 4 ingredient ravioli lasagna could not be simpler. And you’re getting all the great flavor of lasagna in an easy weeknight meal without all the work.

Ingredients to make ravioli lasagna. bowl of ravioli, plate of Italian sausage, wedge of Parmesan cheese, slices of fresh mozzarella, and bowl of pasta sauce.

Ground Italian Sausage – I opted for mild Italian sausage, but you could use sweet Italian sausage or spicy Italian sausage if you want a little kick.

Pasta Sauce – I use a chunky spaghetti sauce that we love but you can use any brand or flavor of tomato-based pasta sauce, marinara sauce, or spaghetti sauce that you love!

Frozen Ravioli – I got a family size bag (48 ounces) of frozen cheese ravioli but again, you could choose the flavor and brand that you like best. If it comes in smaller packages, but however many you need to get 40-50 ounces of ravioli – no need to be exact for this recipe.

Mozzarella – I decided to go a little fancy and use a fresh mozzarella log that was pre-sliced. In all honesty, I probably should’ve sliced it thinner, but nobody in my family complains when they get a chunk of cheese. You could also use shredded mozzarella cheese (which is usually my go-to) for ease.

Parmesan cheese (optional) – because my family is crazy for cheese, I top almost all pasta dishes with fresh shredded or grated parmesan. If you have it – go for it, but it’s not necessary for this recipe.

How to Make Ravioli Lasagna

This easy recipe is just a matter of browning the meat, assembling the layers of sauce, ravioli and cheese, then baking. Here are the specifics:

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F.
  2. Spray a 9×13 baking dish with non-stick spray, set aside.
  3. Crumble the Italian sausage into a skillet and brown.
  4. Add the tomato sauce (spaghetti sauce or marinara) to the cooked sausage and stir together. *We often don’t drain our browned sausage but you certainly can.

Layer the ravioli bake:

  1. Scoop around 1 1/2 cups of meat sauce into the bottom of the pan and spread out into a thin layer.
  2. Top with half the frozen ravioli. For me, this was approximately 50 pieces of ravioli but that may vary depending on the brand and size of the ravioli.
  3. Place the sliced mozzarella (or shredded) over the layer of ravioli.
  4. Repeat with a second layer of meat sauce (around 2 cups).
  5. Then top with the other half of the frozen ravioli.
  6. Use the remaining sauce for another layer of sauce.
  7. Top with all of the remaining mozzarella cheese.
  8. Spray a piece of tin foil with cooking spray, then loosely cover the frozen ravioli lasagna with the foil and bake for 30 minutes. Remove the foil and bake it for another 10-15 minutes, or until the sauce is bubbly and the cheese golden brown and melted. The cooking time may vary slightly and that’s okay.
  9. Let it sit for 5 minutes, then top with shredded parmesan and basil if desired.
  10. Enjoy!

Recipe Variations

The best part of this lazy lasagne recipe is incredibly versatile and there are countless ways to make it your own! I’m a big believer in using what you have on hand, so here are a few ways you can customize this ravioli lasagna bake:

  • Change the pasta! We prefer cheese ravioli, you can change the type of ravioli to suit your tastes. Spinach ravioli or mushroom ravioli would work equally well. You might even skip the sausage and use lobster ravioli for a seafood twist. Tortelinni would also be a great substitution for the ravioli.
  • A different meat? If you have ground beef on hand, you could use it in place of the Italian sausage. Easy peasy!
  • More cheese, please! After you add the first layer of mozzarella, spread 1-2 cups of ricotta cheese over the mozzarella for even more cheesy goodness. Ravioli lasagna with ricotta would even be more like regular lasagna.
  • Add something green. If you love pesto, you could spread a layer inside the lasagna for more flavor. You can also add chopped spinach in the sauce to sneak in some greens.
  • Skip the meat for a vegetarian ravioli lasagna. Use a hearty veggie-filled sauce with chunky peppers, onions and/or tomatoes and you won’t miss the meat at all!
  • Toppings – as I mentioned before, we top our baked ravioli lasagna with parmesan, but you could also sprinkle it with chopped fresh herbs or ground black or red pepper (for a little heat).

Serving Suggestions

We love to serve this baked ravioli recipe with a simple green salad (or Caesar salad) and warm garlic bread to have a well-rounded delicious meal.

Storage Instructions

Store any leftover Cheese Ravioli Lasagna in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3-5 days.

How to Reheat Ravioli Lasagna

Microwave: the simple way to reheat any leftover lasagna is in the microwave for 1-3 minutes.

Oven: reheating in the oven is also an option, and it might even be better the next day. The downside is it takes 30-40 minutes to do this. Bake at 350°F while covered with foil to prevent drying out.

Air Fryer: The air fryer has been a game changer for our family and it’s our newest way to reheat leftovers. Preheat your air fryer to 375°F and place a slice on an oven-safe dish. Cover with aluminum foil and reheat for approximately 10 minutes.

For all methods, check to see if the cheese is glossy and the edges are sizzling to know if it’s fully heated.

The bottom line is that this comfort food recipe is perfect for busy weeknights and it has become a family favorite at dinner time! The next time you need a delicious hearty meal that you can put together quickly, grab some frozen ravioli at the grocery store and a few other common ingredients to make this easy lasagna recipe.
