Light Saber Cookies
I've had these bouncing around in my head for a couple of weeks and gosh, I couldn't manage to get them done. But my husband and kids are all avid Star Wars fans (my husband trained the kids) and I really wanted to make these fun sugar cookies for them.
So finally... I did. And it was a good thing... my kids were seriously impressed! Unfortunately, they wanted to have real sword fights and the cookies crumbled pretty quickly when used like that instead of being eaten😉.
OOOh and bonus. In addition to the tutorial for the Light Saber Cookie Sticks, I have this free printable available for you:

Why You'll Love These Cookies
- This is not a fancy cookie - they're a quick idea and easy! You don't have to have any special sugar cookie decorating skills to make these light saber cookies. But my kids were still impressed with this fun idea I had.
- They're perfect for a Star Wars Birthday Party or movie marathon. With packaging, they're super cute party favors!
- They can be made quickly - because they're not decorated with royal icing, you don't have to worry about icing consistency or flood icing, and there's no "dry time."
- There's a free printable so you can package them for party favors and they'll be super cute with the Star Wars Logo!
- No special Star Wars Cookie Cutters are needed!
Light Saber Colors
I'm confident any true Star Wars fan knows which color light sabers each character uses, but I didn't (because I'm the black sheep in my family who is not a die-hard Star Wars fan). So for everyone else, here's what I know:
- Darth Vader (the dark side) - Red Light Saber
- Blue Lightsabers – Luke Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi (Jedi Master), Anakin Skywalker, Rey
- Green Lightsabers – Master Yoda, Qui-Gon Jinn, Luke Skywalker
- Purple Lightsabers – Mace Windu
- Yellow Lightsabers – Jedi Temple Guards
- Orange Lightsabers – Cal Kestis
- White Lightsabers – Ahsoka Tano
Equipment Needed:
- Mixing Bowls
- Cookie Sheet
- This Cookie Cutter Set OR you can measure and hand-cut the cookie sticks. You want the longest side of the design to be 4-6 inches and the width to be no more than 1-inch (mine were around ¾ inches).
- Rolling Pin
- If you want to package them, you'll need treat bags and the paper and stapler to make the printable bag toppers (details below).
Ingredients
For the Sugar Cookie Dough:
- Butter (softened)
- Sugar
- Salt
- Eggs (1 whole plus 1 egg yolk)
- Vanilla Extract
- Almond extract
- All-purpose flour, sifted
For the Decorations:
- Wilton Red & Blue Candy Melts (and/or green if you like green light sabers... you can make your light sabers any color you want - no judgment here 😉 ) Note: See how to thin candy melts here!!
- Wilton Silver Color Mist Spray
- Red & Blue sanding sugar
Substitutions
- Cookie Recipe: for other options, you could use this cookie recipe if you want a "no chill dough". Or this recipe for chocolate brownie cookies. Any roll-out cookie recipe that does not spread would be fine if you already have a favorite.
- Candy Melts: Instead of using candy melts, you could use royal icing or buttercream + food coloring instead of the colored candy melts.
- Silver Spray: instead of the spray, mix edible silver dust with lemon extract or vodka and paint the cookie sticks silver. Or edible silver paint (this is my favorite).
- No time for baking? In a dire situation (a Star Wars emergency, if you will 😉), you could skip cookie baking altogether and use pretzel sticks instead of cookies. Decorate them the same way - spray them silver, dip them in chocolate, and sanding sugar!
How to Make Star Wars Cookies
- In a large mixing bowl, combine butter, sugar, and salt until light and fluffy with a hand mixer (or sometimes I use my Bosch) at medium speed.
- Next, add the egg yolk, beat it some more, then add the whole egg. Mix in the vanilla and almond.
- Add flour and beat on low until well combined. Do not overbeat. The dough will be sticky!
- Divide the dough in half and wrap each half in plastic wrap. Refrigerate for at least an hour, but I usually do mine the day before.
- When you're ready to bake, allow the dough to come to room temp for at least 10 minutes, then knead it on a floured surface until it gets back to a smooth texture.
- Preheat over to 375°. Sprinkle your work surface and rolling pin with flour. The thickness of your dough can vary, but I prefer it to be around ¼" thick.
- Continue sprinkling flour when needed to prevent dough from sticking. Use a rectangle cookie cutter to cut the cookies into the sticks around ¾" wide and 5-6" long. You could change the size up if you wanted, but if you make them much narrower than that, they're going to break SO easily! You could also use one of the cutters from this set.
- Place them on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Now don't skip this step! Stick the cookies (on the sheets) back in the freezer for exactly 10 minutes to allow them to re-chill. This will keep your cookies perfectly shaped! When they're chilled, bake for 8-10 minutes (depending on size) for the perfect cookie!
- You may get a slightly golden brown edge (or not), but either way, they hold their shape, taste yummy, and are not too crunchy! After trying multiple recipes, this has to be my favorite!
Once you have them baked and cooled, here's what else you'll need:
How to Decorate Light Saber Cookies
- First, lay the cookie sticks out and spray the bottom third with Silver Color Mist Spray. Then let them dry for a few minutes.
- Next, melt your candy melts and then dip or spread the melted chocolate over the top ⅔ of the cookie sticks. I didn't have enough melted chocolate to dip them so I used a butter knife to spread the chocolate over the cookies. Just be careful and do not break your cookies. I did a dozen today and only had one break, but this will vary depending on the recipe you use and how big you make the sticks!
- Before the chocolate dries, add the sanding sugar so it'll stick to the melted chocolate! Then just let the chocolate set (I pop them in the frig for a few minutes) and they're ready to go! I did a tray of red ones and a tray of blue ones...
- Once I had them all ready, I grabbed some treat bags and printed my May the Fourth Be With You Treat Bag Toppers I have two sizes available for you... 4" inch size (which is what I used - they fit the Wilton Party bags perfectly) or you can use 6.5" wide that fit sandwich bags (although they may not be long enough for the cookie sticks but you might want to do another fun Star Wars treat with these toppers!).
- Cut them out, then fill the bags with cookies and staple the toppers on! Easy-peasy!
Note: There are 4 different designs but due to a fluke and dumbness on my part - I printed the same one over and over... don't ask! There's a reason I have other people do printables for me 😉

Pro Tips
- In a hurry? If you will be in a time crunch for a party, make the cookie dough a day or two ahead of time!
- If you want more detail and you have edible markers, you can use them to draw on the cookies.

I too am not a Star Wars fan and was clueless when ask for a star wars design on top of 300 petit fours for a wedding yesterday.
Thanks for the delicious cake recipe. It's my go to for petit fours.
