You guys!!! I have actual, physical copies of MY book, Cake Decorating for Beginners, in my hands and it feels so surreal!! And because I can now, I wanted to share the cover cake, the Night Sky Ombre Cake and give you a tiny peek into the book!
When I first shared about the book (here), I didn't have copies yet. But now I do!! And I want to do a video but honestly, I took the long holiday weekend way too seriously and haven't gotten out of my PJ's since Thanksgiving day. I've also been completely knocked out with a stomach bug for part of that time, so the video will have to wait.
In the meantime, that's my cake on the cover of my book. A cake I decorated in my kitchen and a photo that my 16-year-old daughter took! Yes, Sarah was the photographer for 95% of the pics in my book!
I wrote this book in about 8 weeks time over the summer...
- 26,000 words
- over 5000 pictures
- 5 rounds of edits that ended up being...
- 168 printed pages of cake decorating detail.
Of course, not all of my words and only a fraction of the pictures ended up in print, but my point is... we worked our booties off to make sure we had all the details for you.
Cake Decorating for Beginners
But let's talk about that cover cake for a minute. The Night Sky Ombre Cake is the cake on the cover of the book and it might be my favorite.
If you didn't know, there are ten full cake tutorials in the book, with step-by-step photos to walk you through each of them. And this is one of them.
I share everything you'll need to know to make this cake. A recipe for a from-scratch vanilla cake. A recipe for the frosting and how much of each color you'll need.
I share how to fill and frost and tack the layers. How to do the line texture. There is no detail overlooked!
And the same attention to detail is applied for every chapter - every cake. You will have learned so much when you get through this book!
My first endorsement…
Y'all know who Kerry Vincent is, right? THE Kerry Vincent. Well with encouragement from my husband, I braved up and asked if she'd consider endorsing my book.
I asked several other amazing people in the cake world and I'm in awe of all of them. But the one who intimidated me most was Kerry. Anyway, I was completely shocked and humbled when she agreed to take a look at my book and was the first to respond.
Here's what she had to say (it was shortened on the back cover):
Love that Rose has given great thought and attention to detail when producing this book. She has done her level best to eliminate obvious pitfalls while giving sound advice that will take the panic out of beginner's decorative lives.
Kerry Vincent International TV host, judge and author.
I cannot wait to share more of the incredible feedback I've been given from other outstanding cake artists. I am humbled and grateful for all of their kind words and encouragement!
So, what's in the book?
Here's a short snippet from the Introduction...
My goal is to give you, a beginner, everything you need to know to learn the art of cake decorating. From choosing the right equipment to baking delicious cakes and making them beautiful, I’ve tried to cover every detail. Within these pages you’ll find hundreds of photos and simple, easy-to-follow steps that will help you become a successful, confident cake decorator.
This book starts with basic cake prep—including delicious, reliable foundation recipes—and goes on to teach you how to frost and fill cakes, how to stack cake tiers, and finally how to decorate those cakes with ease. I’ve included troubleshooting tips for the most common problems first-time decorators are likely to run into and charts to help you mix just the right colors and know exactly how much batter you’ll need.
To keep things flowing, each chapter builds on the last so that you can work your way through the book, mastering new skills and eventually combining them in ways that make the most of your creativity.
In addition to the foundational techniques, I’m sharing ten unique cakes that you’ll be able to complete on your own—cakes that will work for birthdays, baby showers, and even weddings. The tutorials include step-by-step photos and detailed instructions that will guide you from start to finish.
