Other than sugar cookies, is there another cookie that makes you think of Christmas more than Snickerdoodles? Not for me!

But I have a confession. This is a somewhat new cookie for me. I never had them as a kid. I never remember eating one before a year or to ago. Ever.

I know, I know.. what kind of world did I grow up in? I can’t explain why other than to say my Mama was not a baker and I was deprived 🤷

But now that I am firmly in Snickerdoodle camp, I think the most important thing for a good Snickerdoodle Cookie recipe is that the cookies must be soft and chewy. And these cookies are perfectly soft and chewy!

Cream of Tartar Substitution

So did you know that it’s very faux-pas to call a cookie a Snickerdoodle and not have cream of tartar in the recipe?

I had no idea how controversial this is, but your recipe apparently MUST have cream of tarter for the cookies to officially be Snickerdoodle Cookies.

But don’t worry… if you don’t have any on hand (it’s not a pantry item for everybody, I realize), then you can skip both the cream of tartar and the baking soda and use 1 teaspoon of baking powder as a substitution. This will not yield the exact same cookie but it’ll be pretty darn close.

The only other thing I’d say is absolutely required is a good coating of cinnamon and sugar on the outside. If you have to, roll them twice to make sure they’re done right!
